Herring Burley

Hey All, I have fished for herring for a while using burley i make with Pollard,Burley Oil and water with a few oats but I feel as if my burley hasnt been working that much as i need to bring the herring to me because im fishing from shore im using this rig Burley Cage--60cm of 12lb mono--Mustad bloodworm hook. I Use maggots as bait but im running low at the moment so need to catch me some more herring for the farm. The only times ive been succesful is when im there at the right place and time but still only get 1 or 2.

Is there any changes i need to make to the rig and burley recipe tips

Thanks Alex

the rig sounds ok but fot a good burley recipee do a search on here, there was a couple of good recipees about 2 months back. herring are best caught near rockwalls or groyns but you could also having a good burley bag in the wash on the beach as well just above the water line so when the waves come in they wash out the burley then you get the burley trail going

So your half way little tacker ! Your burly mix is

sweet with the cage ! Forget the maggots! Just

get ya self prawns peel em cut little chunks with

scissors .... beats a knife! Get ya mix gluggy

enough so it fills ya cage then cast in the same

spot ! Slow retrieval and there you go bud.

Goodluck pirate ! And don't forget the tide??

All comes in with the high then moves out

on Tha low !

stick with the cage. if its the float one cut out about a third of the foam. the cage will sink a little bit instead of being on top all the time

We ended up ditching the floats cages altogether in the Dawesville Cut mainly because of the ripping current but we also found that if the hezza missed it you'd sink down and be a chance of a skippy, KG or yellowfin... or the cursed trumpeter.

yeah did the same myself in the cuy but general conditions without the current ripping through the floater works as it does slowly sink if left.

Mass burley is not a good

Mon, 2017-10-23 20:23

Mass burley is not a good idea as it goes mouldy and stinks within a couple of days. It only takes a couple of minutes to make up a batch. Other herring baits to try - filleted mulies cut into small strips or a herring scaled, filleted (no rib bones) dice up and put in a small zip lock bag with some fish oil then pop in freezer for the next time you go. Prawn is usually my preferred herring bait but sometimes they go more for the fish baits.

Hey Alex, March is normally the peak time for herring so youve got a whole summer to perfect your fishing. With burley the secret is "a little bit -often". When you have plenty of herring in your burley trail, use a size 3 blob, 5 foot of line to your long shank with lumo tube/drinking straw/white masonary plug pulled over the eye of the hook, the water will boil as the herring compete. By March you will be changing your name to " The Herring Whisperer "

alex best herring burley

Tue, 2017-10-24 06:50

alex

best herring burley mate is plain old breadcrumbs , mix with any old cooking oil !!! no water , no pollard

just dry breadcrumbs and oil , it will last for ages as there is no water in it to make it go mouldy and it floats as a slick , mix up 1 litre or 20 it wont matter as it last in adry bucket with the lid on , no smell no mess ... pick a day when the wind is offshore or at your back wherever your fishing from and use a little of it often , put it in your blob [ one with holes for burley ] each cast and you will have any herring around come into it

if you want to be really economical with it , mix it down by 50% with dry beach sand ,,,the sand will hold the oil and creat a slick as well , but the herring wont be able to eat it , so they wont fill up on burley and go off the bite as quick ..keep them hungry longer which means they will bite longer for you

this burley floats , so it will drift quite quickly , and spread , so use little and often !!! davmor above has the rig set up right ...

copy that and get after the herring , there great on the chew

only reason i want to make burley in bulk is not because i dont have enough time before each trip its because sometimes i just have a bit of free time and say why not go for a fish grab the gear and go :)
