High and Dry

Had to do a run down to Turtle Bay to check on a boat that had run aground, luckily both crew were ok, no injuries. The boys had a coupe of days sleeping on an angle and had to put up with 44million and ten flies each. [the worst I've ever seen and only since the cyclone past through]

Did the run down again the next day to assist the tug and line boat in dragging it off the ledge and then the 55nm tow back home to Carnarvon. Luckily there wasn't too much damage to the hull and the pumps were able to keep it afloat until today, Sunday when it was pulled from the water.

How did it run aground? Power loss? Good to hear no one was hurt, boats and rocks never ends well.

Not Sure

Sun, 2015-04-05 15:07

Not sure how and why it ran aground but owner and crew are bloody thankful that there was nearly bugger all swell and what wind there was from the south plus that Rio Tinto didn't have a shipment loading from Cape Cuvier otherwise the tug wouldn't have been available

So many thanks from us, the owner and crew to Rio Tinto for their allowing the operation to happen. If it had of been their much longer they would have been picking up bits of the boat A very professional job done well.

Travel

Don't know what the cost will be, insurance should cover it though.

Both the tug and line boat had to travel down from Carnarvon 55 nautical miles.

Typical big company...worth billions of dollars, but will still try to charge for rescueing someone.

completely off track there

Thu, 2015-04-09 06:48

completely off track there Tim.

They werent rescuing "someone", it was "something".

Even sea rescue is under no obligation to tow your boat, only to save your life and cannot require for a reward to do it.

Community Donation

Fri, 2015-04-10 16:36

Heard a whisper that Rio were only going to charge for the fuel both boats used, not for any other expenses as a community donation gesture.

A very big thank you to them from Bruce if that is the case.

Rescue

The insurance company will cover the cost of the rescue, why shouldn't there be a cost for a rescue, there is always a cost to someone, even if it is by a VMR group, they should be entitled to claim their costs at least.

never

Fri, 2015-04-10 18:41

no never, it is against the most basic principals of seamanship
You need to distinguish between rescue and salvage

There is a cost to rescue, but are you saying only those who can afford it should be rescued?

There is no obligation on anyone to salvage (tow, pump out, patch, repair etc) but there is a general obligation to save lives in danger at sea.

I vaguely remeber that you may be able to get some money from the government if it has caused you excessive hardship, but Ive never heard of anyone claiming it.

Several searches Ive been involved in years back, the police said we could submit a claim for the fuel used, but were asked to come in from out of the area.

Job Number

Sat, 2015-04-11 05:29

If you are asked to assist in a rescue, contact Water Police, give them the details if they don't have them then ask for a job number. This will cover any damage to your our their boat during the tow plus the cost of your fuel.
Our job is basically SOLAS as Rob put it, there to save lives but not vessels.

We tow a boat in as a service if conditions are good but in shite weather we will give the option of taking them off and letting the vessel go or standing by until it gets too bad and we have to leave, this has never happened to me but it is always in the back of your mind.

 The tug boat would be

Mon, 2015-04-06 10:37

The tug boat would be chartered I would guess and would be worth around 10-20 k per day.

No point Anyone else paying for the bunkers and crew costs other than the people using the service

Yep, the, flys were shocking. We picked them up as we sailed out of Carnarvon earlier that week. They stayed wig us for 2 and a half day on route to he Abrolhos. Little buggers were breeding faster than we could kill them. Who'd have thought they would stay with you 40 Nm out to sea.

Well done to sea rescue group and rio tinto

Sat, 2015-04-11 17:31

Good job well done to the sea rescue group and to Rio tinto for their effort.
Thankfully all has turned out ok with no one hurt and a vessel saved.

and that's the bottom line as far as I see it.
