Hilux Starter motor dead?
LN 106 Starter dead
Gday all, know this is more a vehicle related topic but just wanted some advice. Already spoken to a mechanic and gotten his view on it.
I believe that the starter motor on my lux is dead. The fact that when i try start it it just makes a high pitch whirrrring noise, and the fact that if i tap the starter motor with a hammer it starts. Leads me to think yep its dead. Correct me if i am wrong?
So if i need to replace a starter what is my best course of action?
Get one from a wreckers?
Recondition?
New aftermarket? Chinese?
New Genuine?
What i want to know is does anyone know what roughly each of these would cost? Pro's and Con's of each? Any particualr brands that are more better that i should go for?
Anyone else had to do this would really appreciate you comments on what you did.
Thanks, Buz.

Solenoid problem
Buz
Im thinking the solenoid contacts are replaceable in those starters
If you have the denso number of the sticker .....you can get away with a contact kit

A high pitch weering is only
A high pitch weering is only one thing. THE DRIVE CLUTCH in the starter. If it was contacts or brushes it wouldnt make any other noise but a solid click/clunk.If you pull the starter out and take it in to a sparky near you a new clutch will cost you around $125 for a non-genuine one.Just keep in mind the contacts, bearings and brushes may need attention if the lux has done a few kms.

The starter motor in their is a genuine recondition one put in in May 2007. So hopefully the drive clutch is all it is.

Doesnt always need to be
Doesnt always need to be tapped to get going. Seems more in the morning after sitting there all night that it requires some 'love' tapping.
During the day it will usually do it once then i just turn it off and on again quickly and it starts fine??????

You will find it will get
You will find it will get worse and worse and then fail all together.I wouldnt keep tapping it to much either you may cause more drama than you already have.
