Homeless people sleeping at NOR marina rockwalls

Couple of months ago when I went fishing at Hillarys marina, I saw 2 separate beaten up old cars with people living out of them.  One was in front of AQUA, and the other in front of the café on the north wall.

Wednesday night at Ocean Reef marina there was a guy living out of a shopping trolley in front of the BBQ’s, who later moved to the rock wall opposite the bay dragging his trolley across the rocks.

Must be hard living with all the mozzies, rats, roaches, cats and bogans that plague the marinas at night.

Guess this is a reminder of how lucky we all here are.  Internet access has to be a luxury for all those folks and more.

There might be jobs

Fri, 2008-02-22 14:32

There might be jobs available but there is no accomadation in there price bracket available.

I've been seeing pensioners living out of there cars over this summer as they cannot afford the rent in the few places that become available.

I got a 22 year old still living at home because no one will rent to a single 22yo bloke with no rental history

Spot On NOHA

Fri, 2008-02-22 15:07

I'm talking SOR homeless here. The situation is probably similar NOR. The homeless crisis has been in our local paper for a week or so. Its funny, Kwinana mayor Carol Adams has stated to the paper that she was aware of the homelessness situation, but hadn't seen any homeless people in Kwinana. Rockingham mayor Barry Sammels has seen them. Does Carol get out much? Like Bill stated, all you have to de is go to Kwinana Beach one evening and it's evident.

And I understand what Ryan's saying, there are plenty of jobs out there, but there's more to it than that. Interest rate increases and the ever increasing cost of living has forced people with low paying jobs out of their homes. Family breakdowns are another main contributor.

The article stated that we (SOR) have a lack of facilities to cater for these peoples' needs, so they really have nowhere to go. They get turned away.

Like NOHA stated, there is no accomodation in their price bracket available. We have a resources boom here in WA, and a lot of people are reaping the benefits, not only those that are working in the sector, but goods and service providers that can jack up prices now that there are more cashed up people here in WA.

If we can hit that bullseye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate.

It's a shame

Fri, 2008-02-22 16:44

It's a shame to hear all this is going on, the goverment does'nt seem to be doing there job at all, as all the rest have said, heaps of work but no where to live, even the local caravan parks are jacking there price's up, my parents live down South and say its just as bad, I feel sorry for the people that realy try and get no where the ones that are on the DOLL how can they aford the rent with that amount money $380 per fortnight, makes me wonder.

Our kids are going to be the ones that are going to get it hard, specialy if the fuel goes up to $2 at Xmas.

Australia wont be the land to live in the way its going thats for sure.

Tommyt
For those on the dole it would be easier I guess (anyone on the dole please correct me) as they will get rent assistance regardless of the cost of their rent! I think.

As a landlord

Fri, 2008-02-22 20:35

As a landlord I even feel guilty having to put the rent up for my mate in our other house. But with the interest rates going up you have no choice to cover costs, still lucky bugger is paying about $20 week less than what I could get for it if I kicked him out and tidied the place up. Gotta look after your mates though!
