i know someone that did that to a brand new boat that hadnt even hit the water once. funny in a strange sort of way but it def makes you cringe.

i never release the shackle or the hook until the boats above the water

Did it to my brand new tinny, old tinny almost had to float it off the trailer, new one not so much, half way down Woodies ramp and it slid off, felt like a dick but lesson learnt, chain doesn’t get taken off till it’s in the water now!

Can't agree with that Adam i reckon it's one of the best fishing shows on telly. They have to get sponsors from somewhere. Love the way they take the piss out of each other. I notice IFish worstelling had the same thing happen but didn't televise it , that tells you something.

Fri, 2018-11-23 10:26

I like their show and I recon they fish OK. I saw that happen at Karratha boat ramp at low tide. If you know the ramp rippled concrete at a pretty steep angle and a long way down to the water at low tide.

Passed them getting ready to back down as I was backing in, after tying up my boat heard the noise and looked up to see a brand new haines hunter screaming down the boat ramp sideways with the wife on board petrified look on her face. the boat flew out past the end of the jetty and I had to go get it. White gel coat skid marks was on the ramp for months afterwards.

Funnily enough, I reckon that this will send a message to any boaties guilty of the same practice and might save embarrassment and $$$.

Don’t unhook until you are in the water.

So the much advertised "Bar Catch" system failed?

Fri, 2018-11-23 12:08

Some people rely too much on these, idea obviously being that your mate can back it down and you just drive forward, then off. Very slick. I've just started using the L&R Boatlatch on the Reefrunner, and guess what? The bloke backing  it down will still need to get out and unhook the safety chain once the boat is in the water. I use a big s/s snap link, no tension on it, the boat is held on the Latch, just unhook, and I am free to drive forward/drive off. Takes maybe 30 seconds more. We'll unhook the winch cable top of the ramp, leave the safety on. Pretty well foolproof.

As to these blokes, I don't mind them, they know how to take the piss, and good on them for owning up. Worsteling, on the other hand, just a PITA.

Bar catch

Fri, 2018-11-23 12:43

I’d be very surprised if the bar catch failed - practically impossiible for that to have happened after it is engaged. Suggest that they hadn’t engaged the catch after unclipping the winch and safety chain. Fully agree that having at least one safety on as well is esssential, and for the extra 30 seconds or less, there really is no excuse.

Heard the catch had disengaged

Fri, 2018-11-23 13:14

It doesn't have to fail, just disengage. If you unhook everything while parked at the ramp, then have to manoeuvre to set up to back down, not impossible for a bump to let the boat move forward, catch lifts, no one notices.Fully rolled trailer, nice and slippery.Possible. At any rate, leaving a safety on takes any risk out. Worst that could happen, then,if the catch is somehow not engaged,  is that the boat will need to be winched forward to take the weight off the safety chain.  Just been talking to another BC owner, he always leaves a safety on, too.

Sure, it can't happen.

User error somewhere

Fri, 2018-11-23 16:19

it’s not a self loader issue - it’s a user issue. I can add another 2 years and 400hrs to the experience set, as would a large number of users of that system I would think. The bar catch is as good as they get - no problems with the system. At the end of the day, if you take the safety off, no matter if self loader or not, this could happen - one way or another (either never was, or the boat bumped forward at some point, disengaging the catch), the bar catch wasn’t engaged when they hit the decline on the ramp.

Why wouldn’t someone leave

Fri, 2018-11-23 17:59

Why wouldn’t someone leave the bar catch in the retrieve position, reverse down the ramp and take the 2 seconds to get out the car and move it to the launch position... or leave the safety chain on... or the winch in gear and clipped on.

Lent my boat to a couple of mates and they dropped on the tarmac.

Fortunately the motor was well up and just knocked the bottom of the hull out of shape.

I guess there is a chance it could happen to anyone when the thinking caps aren't on.

 A few bar crushers have

Fri, 2018-11-23 17:02

A few bar crushers have ended up on the ramp here in SA, one 780 happened when after reversing in to the water the owner realised the flag was still on the motor and drove forward, must have had enough momentum to roll forward, probably a bit antse.  This could happen with another system I expect.  I had an L and R boatlatch on my last boat and it was great, but as said above, I would reverse the boat over the water but leave it far enough out that no wet fet required to release the safety and cable, but if all failed the boat would not hit anything but water.   Reverse procedure on retrieve

I find the show very entertaining, funny guys, cracked me up when the driver was lamenting that he would be reluctant to launch a boat again and the other guy said "I don't think you'll be asked"  Classic

Cheers

Mate of mine took them out

Fri, 2018-11-23 18:51

Mate of mine took them out and they filmed an episode from his boat. Said they were genuine guys that didn’t try to be anything they weren’t. Plenty of laughs and a few beers off camera. I don’t mind them at all.

How many would of stopped filming and tried to hide their embarrassment? Have a laugh and move on. No real damage done.

I almost got caught this morning

Mon, 2018-12-03 07:34

Offered to take a mates' pots out for him,the bloke I normally fish with--I won't be participating this year, away for work. Anyway, I demo'd how the latch (L&R Boatlatch) worked up in the carpark. Removed the winch cable hook, so relying on the latch and safety chain on a big ss snaplink, which was how we were doing it at Exmouth.  During the demo'ing, I must have left it in Launch. The catch was hooked lightly in the eye attached to the boat, SHOULD have held it. As we were reversing down our bumpy ramp, I felt the boat move a little then come up tight. The bumps on the ramp were enough to let the catch, which should have been left in the Retrieve position, pop out. So I was just on the safety chain. Just a matter of driving forward a little when I was in the water, to give him the slack to unhook the safety, just as if I were driving forward to let the latch disengage.

Anyway, short answer which just reinforces what I speculated on  above ,about how the Bar Catch could have disengaged. If you  put most of the drive-on catches in Launch, they then rely on the boat weight to keep them from launching. Bumps, bounces, application of powerful electric over hydraulic brakes  --any of these can move a boat on a trailer enough to have them disengage. Don't rely on them alone as you back down, no matter how much you want to be the bloke whose mate backs the trailer down, without getting  out, and you drive off. Or you might end up being the bloke all over Facebook, after dumping your pride and joy on the ramp

If it can happen to them as "pro's" it can happen to anyone. Even if I undo the chain I always leave a turnbuckle still attached.
Oldies on here will remember my boat came off the trailer on the road coming back from Dampier to Karratha. From this I now have 2 extra strong attachment for travel.

Hahahaha. Gotta love the bar crusher....not....what an overrated tub they are. Cut thru the waves really? Top shelf marketing that’s it. Paid some good coin for ‘independent’ reviews over the years I reckon. Don’t even compare to a proper heavy Ali boat like a preston, westerberg, razer, stagg etc...Ride no better than a Quinny yet massively more expensive.

bar crusher mottos should be..”all show no go” “bring a back brace and don’t all stand on the same side” and “at least it looks pretty”

Too brutal?

I’ve been in a couple and the trick seems to be keeping them up straight. Because they ride quite high they are quite prone to being blown onto their side and landing on the flat of the hull. Keep them upright and they go ok... well, they bounce around a bit.

As for the show, its good for a laugh.

I reckon they are pretty funny and don't take themselves too seriously. They don't claim to be red hot fishos by any stretch.

We came close to doing that at the Bundegi ramp one night when the boat didn't go on the trailer properly so we tried to "fix" it. Brain fade at the end of a long day but thankfully the boat moved on the trailer but didn't fall off.
