I heard on the news that 12 houses have been lost in the Margaret River area following an uncontrolled controlled burn by CALM. There would have to be some very pissed off people down there.

Fire is still burning out of control, my sons girlfriends place might have gone up, we'll find out more on that tomorrow. Saw the water bombers heading back to base just before sundown, so it's just the guys on the ground for the night fight.
Cheers

Compensation???
Does that mean that people who lost everything can receive compensation thanks to the negligence / culpability of CALM ? Being a government dept mean they re exempt or what?- my Uncle & Sons own/run Prevelly Park Caravan Pk and they re staring down the barrel at the mo! Not to mention the 140 Leavers they booked in for the week aren't - can't stay there now.

The burn was carried ou by
The burn was carried ou by DEC on the 10th and 15th Nov (dec.wa.gov.au) - I get the emails from the wine industry association giving me a heads up. The Nor-wester was fierce yesterday, and i bet there were a few tense moments, looks like it was a flare up from these burns...
Was a few km's from where i am, but i am north and this was heading South West. I was in the local Volunteer Firebrigade a few years back, I hear the guys did an awesome job yesterday, take a bow guys.

total fire
ban for the rest of us but calm thinks it's ok to have controled burns this time of year.
took me dog down to galo's couple of months ago during aweek day to give her a nice quite walk.Ranger pulled up 1 min after i pulled into car park and fine me $50 for me troubles, that's fair enough i was doing the wrong thing. The young ranger got into me about how my dog could kill or disturb a rare bird on this coast. How many RARE birds have they F--King killed with these fires. They need to rename there organisation, conservation and land management my arse.
My heart go's out to all the residents that have lost their houses, thank god there has been no fatalitys.

obviously this should take
obviously this should take 2nd place to the loss of property, but I'd also assume the grape and wine industry could be looking for compensation as well??? the large amount of smoke must have some impact on the quality of grapes?? (any grape growers or wine makers here??)
Bummer about the houses lost!

Too early to say on grapes...
I'm a Vineayrd Manager/Viticulturist - too early to say.
Most smoke taint usually appears in the finished wine where exposure is closer to harvest (or up to 3-4 weeks prior) when the skins of the grape can absorb smoke/ash.
We are just finishing flowering/fruit set moving into some berry development atm, and compensation is a contetious issue - often it is not known until the grapes have been picked and are in the tank (pre or post fermentation. More research is been done and undertaken at GWRDC.
Thats the short answer anyway, there's alot more to it....
