How do you keep the paintwork on your boat in top condition ?

I have a 3 year old plate ali boat - the boat is in top condition and is painted white with grey pinstripes.

I want to keep the paint in a really good condition because it is my pride and joy, and obviously want it in top condition for whenever or if I sell some time in the future.

I am also unable to park the boat under cover for the time being due to space, and therefore it does cop the elements everyday.

Am I going over the top with maybe treating the paint on the boat the same as the car - washing with fresh water and then a light wax !

Who else out there loves their pride and joy and what lengths do you go to to keep your tub in top condition ?

Hate the bubbling/corrosion

Hate the bubbling/corrosion under the paint so it gets a paint job every couple of years. Factory paint jobs are shit.

would definatly look at a cover for it. weather it be a big tarp or a proper boat cover.other than that, what your doing would be fine altho a good polish would help as well. dont get the cheap stuff as it might ruin the paint

give gk trimmers a call in canningvale.
we just got a new cover for the boat, its the second one we have had.....the first one last almost 5 years and has been retired

GK have a new product out now that reflects the sun and keeps it cooler under the cover...which is good for me here in carnarvon when im packing the boat or doing work on the deck during the week...
their prices are good and old mate there does a great job

How big was your boat and what was the price, if you do not mind me asking ? Was it a straight fit over the boat or does have some kind of canopy ?

custom cover for me

Thu, 2012-04-19 11:35

Have also got a custom cover from GK trimmers, 3yrs old and still in great condition. Also towable so keeps the camping gear dry and avoids stone chips to paint and screen damage on those gravel roads. Best thing I purchased for the boat as like you it is out in the weather. Have a look on the GK website there are heaps of pictures of their covers, custom made so they need your boat for a bit.

The only real way to look

Thu, 2012-04-19 12:54

The only real way to look after it is too keep it out of the weather, if you get a cover made make sure it has vents or something to allow it to breathe, TOO many people i see with boats just to leave them out in the elements, wont last long at all. I just sold a 31 yr old fiberglass that still had its original gelcoat and a very nice shine to go with it. It was kept out of the elements and it shows...a nice coat of wax also helps
