How many hours is ok?

Hey guys,

looking at a new tub at the moment... having a close look at Trailcraft Tournaments/Profish between 475 and 510.

Just wondering how many hours of use on a 2stroke/4 stroke? is a safe amount to purchase? how many hours would be an outboards life span?

Any information regarding this/the Trailcraft hulls I would be very interested in, Iam looking at these so I can out my electric on the front and continue the breaming aswell as having a self draining deck.

Thanks in advance

Depends on how the outboard

Depends on how the outboard is treated really- washed after use, serviced yearly etc.

If i was looking I'd buy nothing over 500 hours, though having said that, some outboards go for over a 1000 hours

4 strokes

4 strokes-lack of use rather than overuse is the killer.

Smaller tend to wear quicker but a medium size 4 stroke serviced should do 2000 hrs without a problem. And its probably more likely that the lower unit will pack up before the powerhead.

We have a small runabout at work which has 2x4 cylinder 4S yammy's and is worked HARD pushing boats etc. At 2000-2500hrs both I think had lower units replaced but motors going fine. This is over (guess) 3 years?

black or white anchors included??

Mon, 2012-06-25 08:57

at least 2000hrs should be trouble free (grey, black or white)_

Its true about motors not being used to or not having its  oil changes_  engine oil every 100, leg oil every 200?

Check out 'stilly' 's boat in his profile pic. that is a perfect rig for the river, metro macs _ very versatile

he's going travelling soon so he might even sell it

Jeebus.  If my honda's only good for 2000 hrs , i'm gonna be pissed.

Reckon if you do regular servicing and it gets regular use , you should see a fair bit more than that.

250hrs is barely broken in! If maintained well, shouldn;t be a big deal.

Mon, 2012-06-25 12:00

I work in the industry and to be honest the most I've seen used and worn due to use have been around 5500 to 6000 hours. They look very ordinary at that and will be tired through out.

Water taxis get this kinda of hours regularly but i have never serviced that industry as its more a NSW and QLD market.

Service history is more important that hour meters.

I would be avoiding an etec

Mon, 2012-06-25 17:35

I would be avoiding an etec that is 6 years old and only got 250hrs.  Etec claim they dont need servicing for the first 300 hours.  Potentially, this motor may be 6 years old and never been looked at.  Ask if it has ever been serviced in those 6 years

good luck

The 300hrs is also a 3 year

Mon, 2012-06-25 17:42

The 300hrs is also a 3 year thing. So it should have been serviced after 3 years at least. Should.

You would ask if anything has been serviced in 3yrs, irrespective of whether the owner is a muppet that can't read a warranty statement.

As with the Trailcraft hull I

Mon, 2012-06-25 19:29

As with the Trailcraft hull I had a 485 Tournament for a few years when I was living up in Geraldton, it was a good little boat, but as with most ali boats you used to cop a bit of a pounding in the rougher weather, used to take it out 14 to 15 mile in reasonable weather and a good boat to also take up the river, I also liked the idea of the self draining deck, easy to handle.

There was another fella up there who also had one, but he had a fair bit of trouble with the ribs cracking, I didn't know him to well but he wasn't real happy with the boat, he had a 90 on the back where as I only had a 70, I wouldn't hesitate to buy one again.

Hope this helps.

You will probably find

Tue, 2012-06-26 14:59

You will probably find that the newer injected motors do not have the same issues an old school carburetted donk would after a prolonged period of no use. Like most have said, hours arent really the issue, its how its been looked after.

Im just on 1000hrs in 3.5 years with a 250hp Yammy 4st - most done trolling - absolutely no problems at all. I do my own servicing so I see what wears where if you know what I mean. I got the boat when it was 18 months old with 17 hours on the clock. I just checked and replaced everything that was documented in the 100 hr service manual and away I went. Absolutely no problem since.

Knowing my luck, it'll push a conrod out of the block now Ive said that!

Good luck.

Funny you say that Last

Wed, 2012-06-27 15:30

Funny you say that Last chance but i have found injected engines can be seriously hurt by water in injectors. You end up with injector cost, often pumps replaced and if your very unlucky you can get scouring on bores due to now fuel supply from a dodgy injector. I find carbies really just will need to be cleaned (properly) if sitting around.

I know this wasn't the question but i guess all  motors have there down sides. Some engines are more prone to long hours than others. Some have issues with something and others don't. I guess the truth is get them all checked before you buy. That and a good engine is one that has been used, serviced and looks like its been overall looked after.
