hi guys,
nightmare today, all pumped and ready 1st thing, launched the boat, parked the car (5 km away haha) mindarie was soo busy
got on the boat to notice after starting the sterring was locked up, the wheel would not both left ot right, even trying to manually turn the engine wouldnt work,
oh well, jog back to car, retrieve the boat in the launch ramp, (nothing i could sorry all those that had to share the other ramp, at least people felt my pain)
father in law has a mechanic heading out later,
has anyone had this happen? steering seize up just like that?

I had a second hand 90's Merc back in the day that hadn't had enough grease on the pivot shaft where the motor goes through the bracket. I couldn't get grease to lube past the lower seal and it was so tight it broke the plastic housing/thread on the cable steering whilst trying to lube it .
I replaced the steering but it was clear that the pivot was the cause. I soaked it in WD40, Diesel but could not get it to loosen up. Unfortunately it was a powerhead off job to strip it down. Once it came apart (days of frustration as I couldn’t get the shaft splines to release through lack of grease also!) it was a only a 5min process to clean up the corrosion, replace the lip seals and the reassemble.
This life lesson taught me to lube up all of my pivot points every 3-4months. With a decent grease gun with hose and locking type fitting, it only takes 1minute!

problem fixed
well it turns out the steering arm was just full of gunk, even though the other side has a grease nipple on it , we have been advised to not grease up as over time this is the result, he had to use a drill with a long extension to drill out the crap built up in there,
im officially of suicide watch lol, might still get out this week yet lol

Good result... Now to pray to the weather gods!
Advised not to pump grease in there before but should have, or advised not to now by the mechanic?

weve never put grease in it, had it about 2 yrs, but he said do not put grease in it, i was suprised as it has the nipple and after all it is a metal moving part,
i think hezzy is on the money with the yammy oil ,
fingers crossed for good weather

harro , i have had a 90 hp
harro , i have had a 90 hp yammy on my boat now for 17 years and this happened to me back in about 2007 ..launched up at nanga pushed off , jumped aboard and she was completly locked up , had to swim it back to beach
then we manually moved the motor left and right until she freed up , took some wrestling as it sticks rock hard ,,, it is usually due to not being used for awhile and gunk build up
millards the yammy dealer back then told me dont use grease , use a special yammy oil , and that has worked well ever since , it is asmall tube that screws onto an applicator , you then pump it into the nipples about every 3-6 months .smooth as after this method for years now

on the money
i reckon your on the money bud, makes sense to me, the boat has been regularly used up until a week before xmas, i think the dry heat has dried up all the gunk,
a shitload came out when he used the drill to bore it out,
cheers bud
