Hydrofoils, good thing or bad thing?. I'm unsure whether to fit one or not.

I put one on my boat. Was having trouble with the boat bogging down at low revs. Now its great. You lose a bit of top end speed. Why are you thinking about getting one?

Same reason really, would like it to plane at lowere revs when kids are on the tube. Thinking about a stingray brand ( no drilling ).

Really helped my old tinny,
Really helped my old tinny, except it also turned it into a total deathtrap with a following sea.
I personally dislike them and now think they're just the wrong solution to the problem, you're better off repropping or something else to get a bit more lift.

Till, can you elaborate a bit more about its performance in a following sea please.

When the waves came through, it would try and swing the ass through.
The foil was on the boat when I bought it, and I just took it off in the end.

Absolute last resort
They are an absolute last resort to fix boat handling problems.
When you have a following sea they provide lift to the stern when that is the last thing you want causing the boat to broach without any warning.

I have one one mine and it
I have one one mine and it certainly helps get it up on the plane quick. The problem I have is it makes it hard to troll at anything above a slow troll as it wants to get up on the plane and take off - hard to keep a steady speed.
Till is talking about following sea waves pushing up from underneath the foil and lifting the rear, tends to push the rear around to one side causing boat to want to broach. I have'nt had this problem but I think this is due to my boat being so heavy in the arse the waves don't tend to lift it. They suit some boats in this regards but with some I would definately steer clear (particularly those hulls that tend to broach anyway). You can get some smaller versions which wouldnt get as much lift in a following sea.
Trim the motor up when in a following sea to lift the bow to help stop the bow digging in and broaching (with or without hydrofoils).
Cheers
