Imported fish, what causes allergies?

My daughter is 36yrs old and normally when eating our caught fish, all the demersals, plus whiting, etc.  Since we haven't been fishing for over 12months due to old farts eyes.  She's been buying all types of imported fish.  Now she can't  as she's starting to get the raspie, itchy throat, neck starts to go red, hands and arms also become very itchy.  Yet when they order  shark at the fish & chips shop she is ok.  Some of you fellas are scietnists on here what the hell is causing her allergy.  She's not eating anymore imported fish, as the reactions are getting worse.  I've told her to go to the doctors and get a allergy test.  Is it the preservatives in the fish or where they are grown in poo farms in Asian?  As she works in Coles Deli section and all the fish (as you all know are imported) is fresh (well out of the freezer) and cooked that night when she knocks off work.

She's ok with all shell fish and squid.

Any information will be appreciated.

Thanks

Roberta

the only thing i can think

Sun, 2010-11-21 09:07

the only thing i can think of is the factories are dipping the fillets in an anti bacterial agent before packing and freezing . most of the perth places do it as well but maybe the imported ones are using something not quite right ..

it would be almost impossible to find out what chemical is causing it tho .. i was expecting to read that imported peeled prawns was the problem as youd hate to know what happens to those before she sells them in coles ...

all i can suggest .. dont eat imported crap :P  .. oh and dont eat Basa .. thats the shit farm fish

I think Feral is on the money, sounds like they dip/ coat the fish in a preservative or bleach to whiten it or add to its appearance. This is more than likely the culprit that is causing her complaint.

Coles had some NT Silver

Mon, 2010-11-22 12:00

Coles had some NT Silver Cobbler a fair while back. My wife brought some home and the next day our back fridge stunk of amonia. As for the Silver Cobbler, Straight in the bin.

Never bought fish from coles again. Sorry if this doesn't help you Roberta, but like the boys have said, steer clear of that impoted junk coz you just do not know what you are getting.

I was going to take the shit cobbler back, but i knew they would just give me some other rubbish, so i decide never to shop that section again. And i tell all and sundry to do likewise.

The Prawns are good value atm, $14.99 kilo, from up Northen Australia and thats about the only Aussie product i could find.

I'm not a fan of the methods

I'm not a fan of the methods used to catch prawns in Aus. Farmed prawns don't have the flavour of wild caught but surely the bycatch in prawn nets is not seen to be sustainable fishing?

There is test you can do through the doctors. It is called a "IgE (our allergy Antibodies) and a RAST ( radioallergosorbent test) test against reactive chemicals and also various fish. This may actually prove something, but the best thing to do is not eat the fish that caused the reaction in the first place.

Other test allergy specialist can do is patch testing and they have a huge battery of things they can test for, but I would start with an IgE and RAST.

Hope this helps, but otherwise eat local.
