Like the intro says - unusual catches - Others??

Hi All

Went for a flick with a few Hardbodies this moring in the canning trying to entice a flathead or two, No Luck of that front but I did manage to catch a Bluey!!

Not the first time that I have got a crab on a line but it is the first time I got one on a Halco scorpion 35...!!

Went back to grow up a bit - might have been size but no measure so it lives to fight another day.

Good move

putting him back to grow... My understanding is that it is illegal to catch and keep the blues (or any crab for that matter) by line.

Someone else may correct me if I am wrong.
Cheers,
David

It is not legal to catch

Tue, 2010-11-16 21:11

It is not legal to catch them either by prawing net or fishing net as they are an accidental catch.

You know have been fishing for 35 years or more and rarely bothered to post on these blog but do take an interest in following what others are doing.

Let me say it is typical that as soon as someone posts something that is a little different, or a bloke posts like he is new to this world, their is always someone that is as quick as hell to tell them that what they have done is either illegal or wrong.

Not everyone outside of these forums are without knowledge.................

I remember catching a whole feed of crabs using fishing gear anchored up just outside the Dawesville Cut many years ago.  Unfortunately we were so sick of crabs by then though because there were so many around at the time.  They were thicker than the blowies!

Apologies

Tue, 2010-11-16 21:28

My earlier comment on catching them by line was incorrect, that is if it has a piercing hook attached. If you tie a bait on a line minus hooks and pull it in it is legal.

All of the crabs caught in Shark Bay are caught in pro pots and in prawn trawlers nets. The ones on sale over the last month are freshly caught but for the month before that they would have been frozen then thawed for you convenience as they say because the three boats had a month off and the trawlers had finished their season

The same goes for crabs caught in Exmouth Gulf by the trawlers there.

Their size limit is 129mm I think compared to 127mm for amatuers.

crab while fishing on the beach in Leeman, got it right in just on the water line and the crab let go, cool.  Also went squidding and hit the bottom brought the jib back up and a lump of seaweed, just about to get the seaweed  off and said to old fart there's something moving in the weed, it was a beautiful sea horse, gently got the weed off and popped it back in the water, caught it in the sound, just hope it got to the bottom ok.

I've caught plenty of fish

Wed, 2010-11-17 08:20

I've caught plenty of fish on squid jigs, seems to me to be the only difference between the expensive jigs and the cheapies up here, more fish caught on the expensive ones, hooked a monster Trevally pushing 15kg on 3kg that towed us around for 15 mins before letting go.

I was not aware of it being illegal to catch crabs on a hokked line, i have accounted for many a mud crab up here with my threadie rigs, just wind it in slowly, don't let the crab break the surface and then put the net under and scoop him up.

A few weeks back we got a 60cm cod in our crab pot too, caught plenty of anchors people have lost, a few occys and turtles by accident on the bottom, damm they pull hard!

Wed, 2010-11-17 08:38

similar story, an unusual one for me was catching a almost Jumbo cray off the beach on a tailor rig south of Mandurah.

Couldnt believe my eyes when it hit the beach. I was only about 14 at the time, and had never been into catching crays so it was a bit of a shock.

He or she went back into the drink as at the time we did know its illegal to catch them on line.

probably my strangest catch

Wed, 2010-11-17 08:52

probably my strangest catch on a line would have to be another rod and reel , funny part about it was that there was a good size black bream on the line of the other rod so i scored a decent rod and reel and a backie to go with it. this happened down at the canning bridge . also have caught plenty of crays on a line up in Dongara when i was a kid, they were targeted, no hooks tho just a fish head tied on to the end.we scored about 20 over a 4 day period.

Caught this little reptile a few years back while bass fishing (in the USA)

went apeshit once it realised it was hooked, rolling itself up in the braid (made it a bit easier to grab).

a few snaps later then it went straight back in as mum was probably watching closeby..

at Finucane Island years ago - he was pretty cranky so he was cut loose and dragged back to the water trailing a few metres of line.

theres always random sh*t down there. Probs all the drunkards walkin home from a night out on the piss in claremont. Usually a few bikes too. Tell you what was damn hard pulling that trolley up. Had been there a while i think as was fairly rusty and sludgy.

I was fishing in one of the river mouths in Gladstone, QLD. In  the first four baits we caught in order...

A baby bronze whaler

A baby hammer head

A sea snake

A sting ray

I thought that was a pretty weird combination.
