Insurance for fishing gear / cameras
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Tue, 2009-10-27 22:35
Hi Crew,
Having recently got a new camera worth a fair few dollars and having some pretty good u/w vid camera equipment, I've decided to get myself some insurance to cover them. I'm also heading o/s in the near future for a quick trip and would like to have my photog stuff and fishing gear covered.
Can any one recommend a good insurance company that they've had dealings with, in terms of price and support and I guess 'no hidden factors' in their policies.
Cheers,
Adam

good Q Adam, would be interested in this as well.
I have heard you can get extra cover as part of one's home&contents ins and you just itemise each item with a $ replacement value.
This sort of thing even covers you if spill a cuppa into your laptop!

Hi Adam,
You can always give INSURANZDIRECT.com.au a go.
They have whats known as a "Photographers Pak"
Coverage in Australia and/or Worldwide.
Get an instant quote online and go from there..
They also offer "Paks" for other business types.

You can also try
http://www.photoinsurance.com.au/index.php
Labelled as Insurance for Professional's, but probably still worth the call.
Worldwide coverage on equipment.
http://www.aon.com.au/small_medium_b...tographers.asp
Also worth checking with your home/car insurer to see what they can do and compare rates with the above.

depends Bodie
on your insurance company and your level of cover.
Travelling o/s is another ball game altogether though. But I'd guess you could get travel insurance to cover it.

Not whilst in use
Fishing and sporting stuff is usualy covered under your home and contens but not if it's being used at the time for the pupose it was intended ie:you dropa rod over the side your not covered someone nicks it out of the boat whilst your in a shop your covered or if you break it whilst loading it on the boat you'll be covered or lose or have a camera stolen at the airport your coverd drop it over a cliff whilst taking a picture...not covered...strange stuff insurance

unless
.... unless you can recover the camera (pieces) from the bottom of the cliff
depending on your photography gear travel insurance may fall very short if a claim arises.
On a plus side tho... had a mate holidaying in NZ last year drop his camera in the drink.
Now the camera was an old Canon 60D. (I actually sold it to him about 7-8 years ago when I was upgrading !)
He was insured thru AAMI Travel Insurance.
They replaced new for old !!
The original purchase price of the 60D was around the $5200 mark.
Needless to say he was stoked when advised by AAMI and consequentlty had a big decision to make - upgrade to a high spec body or go mid range and get a good lens.... decisions, decisions...
So it pays to check travel insurance policies very carefully, as some will only pay out around $500 - $1000 mark !!

HBF has a "Personal
HBF has a "Personal Valuables" option as part of the Home and Contents.... My understanding is that equipment which is listed on the policy is covered if you take it anywhere in Oz...
Further to this Home and Contents should cover equipment to the value insured for theft/loss while gear is stored at home, but I itemise everything with my insurer to ensure I'm covered for my fishing / diving gear.
As for my boat policy I am pretty sure that gear on the boat is covered if I am onboard and something goes wrong (ie rod goes over the side), but I haven't read the PDS for some time and haven't had to test it.
Make sure you read the PDS from any insurer to understand when and what is covered!

Items of value
can be itemised and be listed as what they call portables I think, covered under a homes content policy, well at least that's how it worked when I last did this.

You're best bet would be to set up as policy for 'General Property' using the business as Fishwrecked. This type of cover is only available for a business. This can be quite trick without a broker though. You should go on the protecsure.com.au website and check it out - PM me if you have and questions mate.

I know Westpac has a pretty good new cover
I was having a look at it recently. It looks ideal for fishing and photo gear.

with any insurance company you are going to have to read the fine print very carefully Adam.
In a home contents policy, if you nominate specific items (to recoup full value on loss) the premium bumps right up. And you'd need to make very sure the company covers your stuff if overseas under a home contents policy.
Travel insurance is probably the best way to go for that, plus it will cover you for any medical costs, lost baggage, breakage (rods) etc.
Keep your receipts for proof of purchase date and price.

just be aware with items
just be aware with items under your personal valuable insurance is not covered when is use.
I have the HBF valuable insurance and that has covered my saltiga rod snapped on the car door, but had i been using it it wouldnt be covered.
i think i have up to 1000 per item up to 5000 per claim, not bad when its only 4 bucks extra a month.
I think anymore than 1k you need to specify.
Oh yeah i went insurance direct and my rod got snapped by baggage handlers...that was covered...just 3months to recoup my cost
hope that make sense.

Yeah, with them Colin. Looks pretty good and 4k for an item from memory (was updated last week). Up to 60 days out of the county too (like travel insurance).
The big test (like all insurance) will be when a claim is made.
Cheers Pete

I am with Trident for house
I am with Trident for house contents, boat and cars now.
They have an extra clause to cover sporting goods, cameras and laptops etc that are used away from home.( includes fishing gear as well... big ticket items like tiagra's / Saltiga's etc..)
think it cost me an extra $60 per year to list the items I needed cover for. They also cover top end electronics on boats and don't quibble trying to replace your gear with inferior alternatives.
I can highly recommend them.

Would you believe
As someone who has been in the insurance industry for 40 years I am legally prohibited from providing any advice as to insurance products as it is a breach of the Financial Services Regulations.............yeh I know crazy isn't it.
What I can say is that said the products available in the marketplace are many and varied, few if any offer coverage for sporting goods whilst actually in use.
Travel insurance products generally are notorious for offering limited coverage and particularly you need to watch the "due care" provisions which can be onerous and also the limit any one article (the definition of article might well cover both the camera body and its attached lens as a single item).
PM me if you want me to look at a particular product
