Interesting article - firearm control

I was on a plane leaving Adelaide bound for WA a few years ago and read this article....

Its hard to know what to believe in journalism nowadays but i've always been of the opinion that crims get their filthy mits on anything they want so firearm law changes really only affect the law abiding citizens....

Anyway have a squiz if you feel like a quick read...

This article is a few years old now....

John Lott is a well known pro-gun advocate. He will juggle the figures to suit his cause.

I dont read his rubbish.

I am a gun-owner.

However, if Neville Nutcase walks into my workplace with mental issue and is having a bad day I'd much rather he be carrying a machete than an assault rifle.

Murders rates have gone up

Wed, 2018-02-28 21:47

Murders rates have gone up but committed how? The article lacks any true figures and is skewed. You rarely hear of shootings here apart from the odd local bikie skirmish or the odd idiot with a shotgun like Man Monis who should've been shot through the eyeballs early in the piece.

Don't have a problem with gun ownership, farmers , feral hunters, gun clubs etc

I believe there are already good gun ownership laws here and nothing really needs changing, guy who has Mechanic shop in front of me is a professional ferral hunter with his old man, so he gives me a good picture of how the laws here work. Topic aside He showed me a pic of a ferral cat the other day that weighed around 40kg big bob tailed bastard.

Things I do have a  problem with  is access to millitary grade semi auto rifles. (America)  No need for it imo

Access to handguns for personal protection (America) you hear of so many stories where kids get hold of these guns and blow away little sis or bro.

It will always be a contentious issue especially in America where sadly nothing will ever change. I got involved in a debate the other day on a pipeline welding page on FB where most the people on it are southern yanks. When one bloke said to me " Go drink your coolaide and let the real men do the work" I though you and your country  are utterly gun  fucked.

Well put Andy and i am of the same opinion.....

America is now in a big dark hole....

The thing that really pisses me is people here think we are somehow like them!?!?

Even Canada who shares a border on both sides is nothing like those fucking lunatics that hold firearms for all the wrong reasons!!

Wed, 2018-02-28 22:20

same as seakem .... I think the key issue is not gun ownership per se ..but the control or removal of high powered semi auto weapons that have mass killing power along with the hand guns

I am perfectly comfortable with our gun laws here and would def vote against any move to allow weapons like ak47 etc

can anyone need such weapons for hunting or target shooting ???

they are military weapons and belong on the war zones ... not farms or residential houses etc

mass shooting here have not occurd since port arthur , partly due to the removal of semi auto , but also due to our different culture at play imo

I reckon that article might be massaging the figures to some degree
this one here below has the focus right imo as to me to about mass shooting and stopping them

https://www.wsj.com/articles/u-s-leads-world-in-mass-shootings-1443905359

with the ever increasing amount of violence in our society , from schools to hospitals etc its a dam good thing we have guns laws like we do imo

Semi autos and Autos

Thu, 2018-03-01 12:10

Hezzy, Why should a fully vetted, law abiding person who scrutinized harder than most other sections of the community not be allowed a semi or fully auto .22 or similar?
There are plenty of applications they can be used for rabbits, foxes etc.
Farmers (dependant on location) and pest destruction contractors need semi auto high powered rifles for destroying large numbers of ferals such as horses, donkeys, camels, pigs. Bit hard to kill large numbers with a bolt or pump action. Access to these types of firearms is stringently controlled, especially here in WA.

I do agree on the .22LR for semi auto.
Very handy for rabbits and foxes, and can be an alternative for a higher powered rifle on foxes.

Happy not to see assault rifles available

PJIM
this is what i wrote in regards to semi autos below
.[ the control or removal of high powered semi auto weapons that have mass killing power along with the hand guns ]

i had asemi auto ruger 10/22 years ago that was used for rabbits , until i had to hand it in , so no issue with low power semis

its the high power stuff that is killer weapon here i cant see the need for the semis in those , regardless of size of prey , bolt action is enough to use for that purpose imo

Large scale pest destruction such as aerial culls or even in the north with station owners having to combat large numbers of large feral like the ones I listed above then a bolt action simply does not cut it at all. Not when you are talking killing whole mobs of animals in a hurry before they make cover.

Fri, 2018-03-02 07:07

there are other methods that could be employed to remove or cull such animals en mass

muster em and load them onto trucks , off to abbs for food or pet meat

any good shooter should be able to let off enough rounds with a bolt action to cleanly kill any animal in australia , having an ak47 type weapon is not required to kill donkeys or camels , pigs etc ,

it may be a ''WANT ... but is not ''NEEDED' for the control , other alternatives can be used first

 Best little .22 ever made.
I have a Model96 now, exact copy but lever and its not half as good quality or accuracy

Thu, 2018-03-01 11:10

There are right places and wrong places for guns. Any metro areas are definately the wrong place . There are pro shooters in the metro but these guys and girls have a legit reason.

i personally dont have a prob with the laws in oz as they are quite strict but any auto or assault def dont need to be in any private home at all.

One of the big probs in our society is mental health issues with all ages , and unfortunately some people with these issues do get hold of guns . more needs to be done in this issue and many other probs can be sorted along with it.

Are you saying that a recreational shooter/ firearms owner should be able to store his guns at his house in the metro area?

Why?

My thoughts are that it'd be better for members to store their guns safely at home than have all members store them at the club where multiple guns could be stolen with the one break in.

if thats the way you want to

Thu, 2018-03-01 12:22

if thats the way you want to read it fine. i never mentioned rec shooters  but as far as rec shooters go from experience the rec shooters i have known over the years have always done the right thing as far as safety goes, locking the guns securly with ammo elsewhere along with the locks that go in the trigger . one i know also removed the firing pin. as jackfrost mentioned , better than having many guns locked in one place. However i feel that if a person wishes to get a gun licence they need to be a club member or have proof they have written proof from a land owner to say they are permitted on their land to shoot weather it be goats , roos feral pigs or rabbits as an example.
