AVG
Staal..... for a free anti virus/spyware program you can't go past AVG. We use the business version at work and have had no problems at all. Know of plenty of others that are using the free personal version and love it!!!!!
I will be downloading a copy when my current "paid" program expires.
Available from http://free.avg.com/

If you have paid
for your Norton 360 app use their free online help as I have found it worth it's weight in gold and the online
techs have been able to sort out any problem I have had
without any security issues
Just one more cast , honest !!!

I remember installing norton
I remember installing norton once and it ran slower with norton than the viruses (and that was when they had the viruses that used all your cpu power).
Avast is another good free one to check out. A few guys have switched over to that after AVG slipped a bit (though its still a good virus scanner, and what i'm currently running, cause i cant be bothered changing). You can set avast to run when your screensaver pops up which is pretty cool. Bunch of other things it does or does better over AVG (though you still wont go wrong with AVG)

Turn nortons off, get rid of
Turn nortons off, get rid of it.
Delete AVG free, then download it again, then follow the install wizzard prompts.
Should be easy mate.

If you are going places on
If you are going places on the internet that you think might be unsafe there is an application called Sandboxie.
This is very near like useing a rubber as everything is written to the application rather than the hard drive.
Close sandboxie and everything gets chucked away.
I have seen this in use at some of the dodgiest sites around and 100% clean after trying to pick up an infection.
As well as Anti virus dont forget to run spyware checks.
Adaware, Search and Destroy are both free and both very good. Install and run both as if something is missed on one, it is generally picked up with the other. ( Note, you can only have oe anti virus installed and running at any time but can use multiple spyware detectors.)
Spyware these days I feel are just as important to virus checkers.

Agree with Neander
Yup, I use AVG freeware also.
As Neander says, you can get a lot of insideous cookies etc and that's where a spyware product is a good additional layer.

Firewall??
Try Zonealarm as a freebie, works a treat, however I have tested Vista's integrated firewall & defender for spam with great results & am now confident in relying on them for my personal machine.
