Inverter Generators

Anybody got anything good or bad to say about the Honda or Yamaha 1 or 2 kva inverter generators.

Looking at getting one in the near future to QUIETLY run an engel, lights etc.

I imagine like the old saltiga vs stella arguments there both actually pretty good products.

John

Steep

Hired a 1KVA Honda for Steep Point John, couldn't complain as we had it running all day and all night and was pretty quiet.

Got 12-14hrs out of a 4L tank..

Cheers,

Whats a generator worth to hire for a week mate? Sounds like a good idea, might be better than buying one for the couple of trips a year when itd get used.

Similar story

Thu, 2009-01-22 22:28

Similar story with the 1 kva when camping on ningaloo, weren't running much, one engel, a computer at night and speakers for music and a few lights.  Getting pretty much the same economy and was, what I would consider, an essential item for staying anywhere remote for more than a couple of days.

G'day guys Personally I

G'day guys

Personally I would go the Honda Eu20i ( 2kva ). I used to sell them and rate them highly. The Yamaha's are still a good unit. Honda's spart parts and service is second to none. Very economical and super quiet. The Honda's use Eco -throttle which adjust the revs according to the load. Not to sure if the Yamy's do.

Cheers Mick

Yeah BJ. I have a Honda 2kva

Fri, 2009-01-23 09:59

Yeah BJ.
I have a Honda 2kva and its great.
we ran 2 Engels, one on freezer, lights, pc all night. no drams.

boils a kettle too but gives the gennie heaps.

They have a economy button that reduced fuel usage considerably which I have turned on permanently.

One thing to keep in mind is that you must change the sump oil regularly.
They only hold 1L so you should really change the oil every 24-30 hrs.
some people might think this is excessive but look after a honda gennie and they will last over 10-15yrs.

My uncle sold Hondas for 20yr and the only issues they had was when they werent cared for correctly.

If you are taking a freezer

Fri, 2009-01-23 12:57

If you are taking a freezer to make ice, hold bait etc etc then you should look at what is required to start the freezer.

In the past freezers have taken more than 1 KVA to start up. While it may keep a freezer running some electronics require more than that to fire up.

Weight

Fri, 2009-01-23 20:29

That's a good idea Goatch but it's all weight that's got to be carried on the boat.

How do the 2kva models go if they are predominantly running only a small electrical load. Is there any worries with the bores getting glazed if the motor is always run on a light load?

Never seen a problem with

Sun, 2009-01-25 07:47

Never seen a problem with glazing BJ. And as Neander said, regular oil change is very important. Eu20i holds 600ml, Eu10i only holds 100ml. The Eu20i is a much stronger engine (gx31) and is part of the GX series which is their commercial range. The Eu10i use the GC engines which are a domestic engine family. The Gx series are used on compactors, larger gennies, mixers etc. Another thing is you can always use it at home to run most household stuff if there is a power black out - think cyclone etc. Not really possible with Eu10i. Hope this helps

Cheers Mick

EU20i

Well after all that I ended up purchasing a 2KVA Honda. At one stage had a 150l upright freezer, 2x40 litre engels on fridge, 1x60l engel on freeze as well as several work lights. Ran it all piece of cake.

Even continued running in the open after an unexpected pilbara downpour while we weren't at camp. Very happy.

Good choice john, i got a 2kva engel gen set, piece of shit...

Sat, 2009-05-02 20:07

Ran it for 4 days at coral bay then it started coughing and spluttering, brand new so thought screw it ill get it repaired under warranty so continued to run it for 3 more days coughing and spluttering keeping the engel freezer cold...

took it back to engeland, what a joke, got nothing but attitude from the idiot the second i said i had a warrantly claim.

he checks spark plug and its black and gunked up like you wouldnt believe, he says to me youve obviously been running it with the choke on, (anyone who knows anythig knows if you run it with the choke on it runs like a bag of shit) so this obviously isnt the case, so he starts carrying on then then says ok well ill give you a new spark plug even though its not covered by warranty, so i told him no i dont want a new spark plug - the plug being fouled is just an indication of a fuel mixture problem ,i want it sent back and serviced, tuned and adjusted accordingly, but no nothing but arguments from the idiot.

he then checks the air cleaner and taps the shit out of it in his hand getting like 6 grains of sand out of it and says this thing is full of sand! this is misuse and it wont be covered etc, by this point im sick of dealing with the clown and its getting really bloody heated, i then explain its on the suction side of the filter and 6 grains of sand in the filter arent the problem - what a bloody idiot! He then says well i think the sand was on the internal engine side of the filter, my response is then well if thats the case the filter new and installed from factory isnt sealing properly so its either a design flaw or improper installation so again its not my fault so just send it back to engel please!

Eventually the engeland idiot agreed to send it back (purely because the next step wouldnt be anymore yelling at each other but fists getting thrown)

Anyway long story short keep away from engel generators and keep away from engeland, i was trying to do the righty supporting a small business, next time ill just go to bcf or equivalent.

After sales service

Sat, 2009-05-02 20:11

Unfortunately Kane many businesses are let down by their after sales service. Its a shame really because it doesn't take long for the word to get around these days.
