I/O Diesel legs/jets

I am looking at a Diesel inboard for my next boat(Maybe but probably not)

The question i have is:Are there any sterndrive legs ( bravo, alpha, Yanmar 6LPA or any other) that have the ability to come right out of the water. Incase its a very shallow launch to drop the boat on the sand? Or to skim across that super shallow reef?

Add jets to that list!

Happy to hear anything else about Diesel inboards vs twin?

Cheers,

Vinnie

Jet unit

Have you considered a jet unit, less moving parts and around the same efficiency as a leg.
Castoldi has units that bolt on to the stern where as Hamiltons sit underneath.

Both units are heaps cheaper to buy than legs

Nah i havnt even thought about that. Will have a look.

Cheers

Looks very interesting actually. Would certainly be as shallow drive as you could get. How would it go with the intake running close to the sand in the shallows or sitting in the sand when beached ?

they handle it no worries, designed for it.

But they arent so flash in open water depending how deep the V is, and also (in general) arent as efficient when heavily loaded

I have looked fairly close

Wed, 2014-03-19 18:30

I have looked fairly close also Vin, none will come right out of the water due to the pivot point is already at waterline level.

All of the modern ones should lift above the keel level to allow beaching but none of them like being in gear at that tilt as the uni joint angles are extreme especially with a bit of helm on.

And thgats the main reason I cant go to one, I like to sneak across the shallows at the islands but if the leg cant operate at the trim then its going to be exposed and the duoprop type setup is especially vulnerable.

The Yanmar legs do look nice though having wet clutch type setup rather than a clunky dog clutch like most.

Nah my alpha doesnt like

Wed, 2014-03-19 19:06

Nah my alpha doesnt like beaching at the moment haha. Think that operates pretty much trimmed right up.

I figured it was just a pipe dream at this stage.

Really like the look of the Yanmar with joystick control ( Total gimmick but why not)

A mate of mine managed to drop a 26 footer in the middle of Ennis ave in Rocky quite a few years ago, the steel hull had a few dents in it and so did the road but the jet unit was completely unscathed.bloody scary experience when the boat your supposed to be towing is suddenly next to the passenger window. What followed next was like a scene for a king gee add with the recovery.

Wed, 2014-03-19 20:00

True, was the jet right under the boat like in the photo i posted or out the end ?

Any ideas if they suck up sand ?

Losing a boat can only be bad. I always worried about it. Even with my winch, chain straps haha

I have a jet unit. Inshore or flat seas only.

Has 2 speeds on it Vin, on the gas or on the trailer.

shallow work is great, trolling is a pain in the you know where.

constant steering adjustment.

loaded is a pig on fuel.

runs a 5.7 chev btw.

will upgrade to twins or large single late this year if all goes well.

has a sand trap so no drama there.

youtube some footage, can drive in zero water and a foot away from the shore.

been to scared to try however.

cant run out of water, this is not negotiable.

have to disconnect from motor to flush motor also pain in the .....

but have heat exchanges so don't disconnect just use water pressure..

would I buy another? Sure if it was a 50 ft west coaster and I lived at the abrohlos.

do like the fact the motor is on board and accessible if and when things go wrong. V8 chev is not that hard to get home if need be.

ran 10 wraps of 100 lb leader  when the fan belt snapped in jurien last year. Bloody McGuyvered it all the way back in.

Nailed it Vin

Wed, 2014-03-19 21:34

There seems to be a whole lot of nothing going on till you plane. 1000 rpm to 2800 rpm for mine.

stab it to 3 grand and will leap out of the water. No worries at all.

gently back to 2850 maybe ok but will sometimes fall back in and bog down.

 Worse with a load.

its the old go hard or go home thing.

great for racing however.

Daaron has nailed it there

Daaron has nailed it there Vin-I have looked closer at jets also considering how much time we spend at the islands.

Vinesh in my very limited

Mon, 2014-03-24 14:53

Vinesh
in my very limited experience (ie a few boat trips on 7m boat running a Hamilton) Jets seem to like/need rpm to be effective - at manouverability a bit of compromise
I had a boat that had twin merc diesels (220hp) running through bravo 2 legs - legs are good, the diesels were good, the "marinisation" side of the Mercruiser diesel "not so much"! - was very efficient when it wasnt having elbows replaced!
Arneson are the nuts - dont see them too much here but they seem to like them in s/east asia in military/navy/customs applications.....

Revs

With any jet, you need to have plenty of revs and control manouvering by using the bucket unlike shaft or sterndrives

Reverse

Mon, 2014-03-24 17:19

That's what they call the thing on the back of a jet unit, to get reverse you drop the bucket and it directs the stream back under the boat, no changing gears or dropping revs.

They are fun things to drive and very scary when you are learning if it has plenty of grunt
