Jeep CRD
Hi guys
I am contemplating moving on the 80 series Turbo Diesel Landcruiser in the near future and was thinking about a used Jeep. Now, the question I need answered is this, in what year or which model did the "good" turbo diesel Jeep get introduced. I understand that the earlier models werent very reliable, but Vinesh and others are swearing by the newer ones.
From what I am reading it appears the 3.0 CRD is the one to go for. Did they start around 2006?
Would there be any issues I should be looking for in a model with around 100,000km
Feel free to drop in your opinions...and if anyone is super keen on a 1992 (late 92) 80 series factory TD with auto and 305,000km perhaps we can come to an agreement...but the wife may still put the kybosh on the idea as she dearly loves the cruiser.
I did then the best that I knew how. When I knew better, I did better.

Late 2011 was when the good 3.0L turbo V6 CRD was introduced, the models before were a bit thirstier.
I have 1 & no compliants, tows 3T boat loaded on trips o problems. Went out to West Cape Howe in Albany the other week & was more impressed with it doing the track than my 120 series prado, both with 2" lifts.

WH Model
WH Model, from 2006/7 has the 3.0CRD V6 (same engine in M Class Merc). I bought one with just over 100k KMs. The only issues Ive had was the front suspension control arm bushes were worn out.
I've lifted and fitted bigger tires to increase clearance (one of its few downfalls). Torque is really good. Tows really well (19ft glass centre console).
No complaints, huge value for money IMO.
WK and WK II are the new models from 2010/11 onwards.
Hope that helps.

WH model
Ok. So the WH model had the same motor as the current WK but just less output. I can live with that.
Cheers everyone. Keep the feedback coming if you have anything to add.

Nah differnt motor from different company's. WK/XK (2003ish to 2009?) has the 3.0L OM642 from the Merc sprinter van (among others) while the WK2 has a fiat built (VM Motori) 3.0L but not sure about details. I have a 2007 with the OM642 and 210,000 on the clock and cannot rate it highly enough. Have not heard anything either way about the other engine so can't comment. If your are mainly concerned about towing then go for the Jeep. If you can find a Commander (XK) even better. Cruisers seem way overpriced for what you get.

The WH has a 3lt merc engine that I have heard good things about .
The WK has a 3 lt Fiat/VM motori engine that is awesome 570NM of torque . Its faster to 100 KM/hr than the 5.7 petrol .

Just drive one
Do yourself a favour and take one for a test drive and decide for yourself. As others have said awesome power and fuel economy but a second hand WK2 CRD are almost impossible to find. The only people knocking them are ones that haven't driven them. I tow a 23ft glass boat effortlessly and the reverse camera is great for hooking up to the tow bar.
This habit is getting expensive!
