All in all you want find a better car that can tow easy and has all the features for the price
I have the 2014 8 speed, IMO Best car on the market for what u are asking for. But on the other hand you could go out and overpay for a toyota or nissan to do the same job haha. My bro has a 200 series and words from his mouth were the jeep shits over it for comfort and STYLE.
Great car. Tows my 7.5m boat easily. I sit around 100kmh. Economy drops to 18-20l/100km when towing but it is a big boat. Without the boat i am high 8's around town in stop sart traffic. e
I have the limited with self levelling suspension which is great in theory but struggles a bit in reality as it sags in the arse a tiny bit. I would like a set of stiffer springs but it is a bit of a drama to get replacements, although some companies are working on it.
I have the 3.0ltr, 5 spd Diesel Trailhawk mate and it is the best tow vehicle hands down I have ever had for towing my 6.1m ally. Great economy and second to none for comfort on long hauls.
After much investigation and discussion with fellow FW members I lashed out on a 2014 diesel Overland. I stepped out of a petrol V8 Sahara. The Jeep pulls my 23 Cruise Craft (3.5t) with ease. I recently towed to Mandurah and back, sitting on the speed limit (up to 110 KPH) and did it easy. About 1700 revs in 8th gear and averaged 14.8LPH for the round trip - it made the petrol V8 cruiser look pissweak.
Its smaller and not as quiet as the Sahara and possibly not as comfortable as the Sahara (a longer trip will tell) but the performance and the economy pushed those minor negatives out the window. In town average 8.2 - mine has the quadralift and it doesnt even notice when the boat gets dropped on the back.
With all of the features in the Overland it easily compares with the Sahara but at nearly $40k (!!!) less than an equivalently optioned Sahara. Bang for your buck, you cant go wrong. So far no weird little faults but its early days as I only have 4,500kms on the clock but with on road assist, if something happens I'll just suck it up (and keep my $40k).
If I was going to bash the crap out of my vehicle with serious off road work, I probably would have stuck with Toyota as they are built like a tank but I just do local and tow the boat on highways with a little bit of sand here and there, dont need a tank for that !
+1 to all above but I do have an elect prob with park brake light staying on. Common fault apparently and easy to fix under warranty they say. Will know if that's true next week.
My 6.1 glass boat and prado used to constantly squabble about who was in charge... since the boat saw the jeep it has shut the #*@# up and done what its told. Better economy too.
Sold my same year prado coz it was gutless and boring. No elect faults coz they dont have any! Surprised it wasnt a rip chord start!
Toyotas are a good bus for a mine site but if you want to enjoy driving.... get a jeep!
I have a 1998 Jeep Grande Cherokee, have had it now for about 10years and been all over the state with it, Broome, Karratha, etc, etc, and have owned Landcruisers previously and find the Jeep much more comfortable and more pleasant on long drives but as jarrid has stated they are a bit thursty. Good for towing, I used to tow my 22' Chivers Seamaster with the Jeep no problems at all.
My work vehicle is a current modet diesel Prado, it tows my 4.9m Webster Twinfisher up to Denham OK, uses more fuel, probably the equivelant of the Jeep when towing.
Hope I have given you some insight into the older model Jeeps, great vehicle IMHO as well.
Had the old model Overland with 5.7 Hemi, man I loved that car, but it was ridiculously thirsty. I used to jump in my 1970 old school carby V8 Valiant to drive around town just to save fuel - not kidding!
Now have the '14 model Laredo CRD with 8 spd, they reckon 0-100 it's faster than the Hemi, but doesn't feel the same. Love the diesel, and unstoppable off road (love pulling your mate out of a bog with 35psi in the tyres!)
Doesn't even know when it is towing, and diesel economy is awesome. Can't think of anything that comes close without spending another $30K.
Brought a V6 turbo diesel double over head cam jeep commander in 2011. Excellent to drive but was a Lemon... Lost $14000 in a year, took it back to dealership where I brought it 4 times. Im now scarred and have an immense dislike for the brand and build quality. Ended up leaving it and the dealers the 4 time and refused to pick it up.
Have to agree with you Vin. Towing on the freeway with 3T plus of boat and passed a newish 3.0 litre D4D prado pulling a 20' skiboat. The Prado was working hard and I just sailed past them easily. Both vehicles 3.0 litre, probably similar kerb weights but Jeep output much higher than Prado. approx 70kw and 190nm torque more and this converts in the towing stakes
My inlaws just got 1 so I tryed it out it was ok but had nothing on my new 200 .might but it towed ok but would not beach launch with it be interesting to see how long it lasts towing 3t all time on big runs but very nice to drive just not for me
Love my GC but found servicing expensive, about a 200% mark up on parts so started getting them from Mopar in America and their on my doorstep in under a week. I also got the wife a Cherokee limited because the grand cherokee is so good but I would not recommend that one as it has a problem with the V6 4x4 and jeep don't know how to fix it!
