Jigs for Exmouth

Hello all,

In the planning stages for a trip up to Exy in the new year and would like to try some metal jigs in deepish water (100m).  Have used a few small jigs for Perth demersals but need some heavier gear to reach bottom fast.

Traditionally we use bait but I'm sure jigs will gain plenty of interest out there.  Are there any favourite jig shapes for this type of work?  I assume the long slender jigs work better by less flutter and getting down quicker.

I have done some  jigging for sambos at Rotto using the knife jigs but that was dropping jigs into an aquarium - not long for a hook up.  Do you just have one hook up the nose end of the jig connected to kevlar type material?

Thanks in advance

Chris

your on the right track with you thinking of size/style of jig just don't get to 'attached' to any of your jigs.

Between the men in grey suits and Mackies they don't last long

 Hi Chris

not an expert by any means, but I have done a bit of jigging around exy.

I found that colours etc weren't too important, however I did need a variety of weights due to current variance making it hard to hit bottom. The jig types you used around Perth will be fine, the fish will eat them

cheap jigs also important, as sharks and Macks can take a heavy toll.

Cheers Steve

Jigging Exmouth

Hey mate,

On our last outting up in Exmouth a mix of speed jigs and fluttering style jigs worked well. Ones that did well were the Jigging Master Fallings and Rocket jigs, Vexed double bases worked well too. As mentioned having a variety of sizes is crucial where as colour wasnt. The more up market jigs like lambles did work well but the mackies were horendous at times. Nothing worse than when your line stops and you think youve hit the bottom only to realise your jig is gone. As for the shark issue the best thing you can do is move to new spots. They will take any of your gear regardless of if its using bait of jigs.

There are plenty of good fish including goldband that will eat metal.

Good luck

pirates....and soft plastice for shallow 15-30 m stuff. Gotta think outside the box in terms of fishing inshore.

and what oceanside said for deeper stuff (never really did that, never really had to) just trolled for bills outwide.
