Got an idea for you

Tue, 2011-05-10 11:39

Jump on ya bike, visit the shops in person, win them with personality and show them your happy to do that little extra for a job - like getting out there yourself.

I hire 15-60 year olds all the time casually and I only hire people that see me persoanlly, no matter how good they tell me they are in applications.

Just my opinion.
Good luck!

Yup thats what

Tue, 2011-05-10 20:31

my eldest son did, got on his dirt bike rode down the side of the railway line from Cranbourne (Vic) to Dandanog and got his apprenticeship as a Fitter and Turner, must admit that was a long time ago.  But the future boss loved his spirit and hired him, it was good as his boss was a Boeing Engineer and my son learnt a lot more than most apprentices.

Wed, 2011-05-11 08:55

I'd have to agree..... I wouldn't hire anyone that emails me, or even worse posts on a public forum. Sorry....thats not job hunting, you either lack motivation to leave your computer chair or you have no communication skills other than typing. Remembering fronting a tackle store takes communication skills! Might be ideal for a computer programmer job?

I got my first job by sending in my resume, although no experience i put relevant things on my education, hobbies etc. I got no response, so I went into the store (Supervalue->dewsons->now IGA) and asked for the manager. He immediately asked if I could work in 2 days....thats how it is done. Not post n hope.

I could bet my bottom dollar anyone who lacks the initiative/motivation to actually get a job through meeting n greeting or at the least calling, would not rock up to work when they felt like it.

IMO

ease up mate,

Wed, 2011-05-11 09:12

he is job hunting.

at least the little bloke is trying. how many other 14 year olds are looking for work, instead of smoking dope and crack at the local skate park, and being a pain in the arse little street punk shithead grafiti artist?

unfortunately for anyone against it, TIMES HAVE CHANGED, and he is using the available resources (the internet), to look for work. i applaud the little fella, and if he was of age, id probably offer him a job.

that "post and hope" attitude that you are so against, is exactly the same thing as you did. you sent in your resume, and im sure he will too, once he knows where to send it.

stop bagging out someone that is obviously trying to do the right thing, and especially someone at such an impressionable age.

Bang on Scotto

Wed, 2011-05-11 09:19

Bang on Scotto!!

Guys he is just trying to make a crust as a young fella. What's the harm in that?

Sure his post could have been more in depth and also added he was available to come and see the owner/manager etc but give it a rest.

Give advice to the young fellas and not bag them out for trying. Constructive criticsm would have been better than bagging him out.

Cool41 - Mate on the weekend or after school, go to all the fishing shops around you, take in a well constructed resume and ask to speak to the owner/manager. Be friendly, vibrant and have personality and I am sure this will give you the edge over others.

Cheers

Simply expressing my opinion, advice and my experience with people. I've seen it too many times before......
Plenty of other young fellas who do what needs to be done. Like wearing smart casual clothes, rock up, talk to the manager, make eye contact, take time to personalise a cover letter, make a resume, take it seriously, make an effort etc..  and do so much more than a thread post. Those guys i would give a job in a heartbeat
Good luck too him....but i wouldn't be hiring him. Up to him to take this advice, and good luck to hires him on this thread post.

I've never been refused a job in my lifetime. As a business owner now, I delete any emails I get with resume's, some i even get one sentance asking for a job as above....its a joke to me.

I would rather give the young fellas advice instead of bagging someone that you have never met and say you wouldn't give them a job because of a forum post.

Wed, 2011-05-11 10:29

First impressions last. This thread isn't a good impression of character in my eyes. Laziest attempt i've ever seen. Little bit of bagging yes, but along with constructive criticism.

Even asking your dad or friend for a job has more effort, as it takes some talking and convincing.

I'd like someone to tell me on a worst/lazier way, or less inspired way of applying for a job then a one sentance thread post or email. Coz i'd like to know? Enlighten me.

Not doing anything at all is worse isn't it? He's 14 and is having a crack but just probably needs guidance.

I agree he went about it the wrong way but at 14 surely giving him good advice is better for him?

Anyway all is done now. I am sure he will take everything on board and have a go at it! Enought to be said here I reckon.

Who knows

Wed, 2011-05-11 10:42

He may have already gone around and asked a few businesses and this is his way of seeing what else is out there, you just don't know. I reckon its great just to see a young fella using some initiative to try and get a job these days, even if the 'sentence' could use some improvements. It's not like he's going for a bank teller job or anything and someone may just have some part time work that could work for both parties, if you don't ask - you don't get.  I think he's already got some valuable advice from this thread.

My read in's suggests he hasn't tried talking to anyone. If he has, I apologise and I guess this is his last resort. Then i would suggest a better sentance.
No its not a bank teller job, but it requires the same people/communication skills which a thread post can't portray.

Spence,

Im glad your such an expert, I for one am a owner of a fairly succesful small business and if your "character" on here is anything to go by I would employ the "lazy kid" whom asked something harmless on here rather then "expert" the know it all shit house know it all attitude you portray.

Personally I see no harm in persuing more then one avenue to find out whom is looking for casual labour. However I see a large amount of harm in attacking a kid whom is trying to do what they see as the right thing.

Get your head out your arse, and if the forum is a waste of time, what the hell do you spend so much time on it for. It is a way of communicating with others.....oh wow.........

Just my HONEST opinion.

you are missing the point spence.

Wed, 2011-05-11 10:46

He is trying to look for a job. at least give him the credit of that to start with. he may fail from this thread, but he will never know if it works, or experience failure unless he tries, which is exactly what he is doing.

just because you wont give a job to anyone that won't suck your dick, shine your shoes, have sexy clothes, or get off on eye contact, doesnt mean the rest of the world should either. anyone that is at least willing to have a go, deserves a shot.

and, get with the times meat head - nearly every single job application is online these days. even the ones in the newspaper tell you to send your resume to an email address.

A very mature response. And completely oblivious to my points being a hero. Kudos

i am with the times. Hell i made my business webpage and change it day to day, I also program computers. Yes they are all online, but it requires submitting resumes, cover letters does it not? not a thread post. And these are for larger coporate companies who deal with 1000's of applications. Not a local tackle store who may get one application in a month.

My advice young bloke is to offer your services to do some work experience, landed my first job (and a few others) at 14 doing exactly that. Trouble is at that age you have limited or no experience but it’s a chance to prove your worth to the employer & at least gets your foot in the door.

Wed, 2011-05-11 12:30

Hello every one, 1. I haven't been able to get out and talk to staff and managers etc as i have STATE sporting commitments and am currently taking a university level course on C++ computer programming. 2. The first point may raise questions or comments on not having the time to work, i DO have the time to work. 3. I have done work experience and will be doing more in a couple of weeks. 4. The internet is the primary source/tool used in todays society for things such as job searching. 5. I have a vast amount of fishing knowledge for my age. And lastly to spence i have asked family members for work and i have the opportunities to go work with them in their fields but would rather somtehing i enjoy, and this thread wasnt a serious ask for some one to give me a job, it was more aimed at seeing if any one was hiring/had places available and would hire a person of my age. And thankyou for those who gave advice much appreciated Regards (this is not intended to p**s people off just get the facts straight...)

at 14 you seem to be quite advanced in what you are doing and as a potential employer I would have to ask about what commitent you would be able to make toward making my business progess. An even more important question would be why study what you are (IT) and then suggest that you want to work in a tackle shop "near you". Where is near you mate?

I can assure you also that sitting on your arse and looking for work using social media may sometimes work but when the social security system starts to kick in then that will all disappear. GOYA (get off your arse) mate. Go talk to the guys at the tackle shack "near you" and see what they have to say. Good luck young fella.

i am 14, im after a part time job, that is like asking a university student why are you studying "IT" when you just applied for a job at red rooster?

on another note, i am studying "IT" as it is something i would like to turn into a career later on in life and instead of getting a job at some fast food joint which the majority of people my age would do, i would much rather get a job at a tackle shop and do what i enjoy, yes i know you cant always do what you enjoy and work is hard blah blah, but there are opportunities for me to do what i enjoy and im going to take them.

regards

Jeez -tough gig for the young fella -

Cool41, take the positive advise in this thread and can the rest - the world is full of knockers and as you find your way through life you will learn to dismiss them  -

To all those people who have knocked the young guy for posting on here instead of getting off his @ rse  -well thats a bit dissapointing and all a bit hypocrytical - he was asking for help which is not too different to a lot of the posts on the forum - if you dont like change then why dont you abandon the forums and go and join a fishing club that meets every wednesday night in a smoke filled room at the bowling club that smells of stale beer

As he stated he's just looking for part time work, as we all did (well most) when we were younger..hell i worked at a petrol station for a while pumping fuel!

Great comment on trying to get a part time job doing something you enjoy...rather than fast food etc. If it works, the better for you.

ps: C++ isnt as common as it used to be, (i studied it 10 years ago!) be good to look into some other languages like .NET, java, PHP etc :)

Depends what you're programming for (e.g. net/networks/etc) ;)  A lot of places do java before c/c++ though which does make a bit of sense for various reasons. Though, for IT, I would agree with you, but software engineer/programmer might be a different story.

FORTRAN is clearly the best. Not only does it start with F, which is several letters ahead of C, it has lots of capitals, unlike those clearly inferior languages like PHP, .NET, XML or even HTML or PERL.
