Johnson 25 HP 2002 model

hi guys,

I have just picked up my tinnie with a 25 Johnson 2-strokeoutboard on - The guy at the shop pull started it first time, and said they were prone to flooding, and it has a stupid prime lever thing on. He showed me the water coming out of the tell tale, and put in in gear and showed me it was all good.

I get home 10 minutes later, and the motor wont start???

There are no external kill switches and the motor is in nuetral - checked this..

i then toggled the prime thing, and it smelt flooded - took the plugs out and pulled it a few times, put them back and the motor started, but did not idle and died, I opened the throttle manually and kept it there, and the motor started and ran at a high idle, cause of the forced throttle - I held it there for a while to clear out its throat a bir, and noticed the water was not flowing from the tell tale, and dropped the motor to an idle, but it just died.

i checked the flow and it was fine on the muffs. The leg seemed to be hot, so i let it cool off, removed plugs, drained the carb from the screw on the bottom and the plugs are brand new - checked for spark, and they are sparking well.

forced the throttle agin and restarted the motor - same thing, runs erratically and wont idle.....

Any Johnson guys out there with a tip?

I can take it back to the dealer to check it, but must be something stupid, as it worked fine there??

Any help would really be appreciated

Fuel screen filter housing?

Thu, 2012-03-15 20:41

I had an older model 2 stroke Johnson years ago.

I found that they seem to have a fairly easy to fix problem where the fuel supply line joins onto the motor.

If you pump the hand priming bulb on the fuel line then have a look at the black plastic housing where the fuel supply line goes onto the engine. Often they get a very small hairline crack and it will cause the carburetor to suck air along with the fuel. The housing normally has a small bolt on the centre with a flat blade screwdriver head fitting. Undo the bolt an you will remove the housing and a small screen filter.

They are fairly cheap to replace $10 or so.make sure you get a good seal but don't over tighten the new fitting.

I suggest giving this a go first of all. If u are in the metro and you get stuck then let me know and if u are not miles away I could possibly take a a look.

Thanks mate - will give this a go first, and then take it back to the dealer if it does not work - I am in Safety Bay, so miles from the metro, but thanks for the offfer anyway mate.

Sounds like it could be a sucking air problem - that would make sense.

cheers for that.

Twas' the choke - the primer

Fri, 2012-03-16 14:10

Twas' the choke - the primer lever is also a choke, so if it is not fully in, it stays choked...

Resolved that at the dealer this morning, but took it out for a run, and it does not suck in any water, so 5 minutes later, after all the effort launching and taking a day off work to sort this out, the tell tale does not put any water out, and the motor starts getting hot... nursed it back to Safety bay ramp, back on the trailer, and back to Rockingham boating - Colin reckons it is something simple, and she will come up right... frustrating how these guys let the boats out of the yard without checking them hey... a whole day wasted because some dude did not check the motor properly... two hour round trip and 5 minutes on the water... all day.. must be something bigger as he said he would call back in an hour at 11h30, and stil nothing...

I am thinking blocked thermostat, or water pump impellor here....???

Hoping to get out on the water tommorrow, but not impressed at all with boats and dealers today... The missus is whinging how I bought a dodgy boat and wasted money too...

Went to BCF and bought a whole lot of gear, sounder, seats and stuff to kit my boat out, and no boat yet... also looks like no giving it back and getting out of the deal... sayig that though, Colin was helpful enough, and at least offered to remedy the problem... it is only a 3K boat, but without an engine it is a very expensive row boat...

Waitng, waiting...
