Just another Salmon report.
Havent posted a report in bloody ages, mainly cuz my car was out of action, so figured this would do.
Had a couple of days down in Albany a while ago. Had to miss the perth LBG club overnighter for it but seeing all the salmon reports coming in I decided to make the trip south. Did a heap of driving on the first day trying pretty much everywhere from two peoples bay all the way back down to salmon holes. Herring in the millions at two peoples bay with about a dozen chasing every lure I put out, but no sign of the salmon, pretty much the same at the next 5 or so spots I checked.
Got down to salmon holes late arvo and the beach was packed, people had trashed the place with beer bottles and salmon heads all over the place. Didnt like the idea of fishing in that mess, if I wanted to fish shoulder to shoulder I would have stayed in Perth. Watched the swell for a while and decided the rocks looked ok, got up there and fished for a bit with a little metal slice. Within 5 minutes the guys next to me picked up a good size salmon on a plastic and after seeing the effort it took and the danger they put themselves in trying to land the fish I decided this spot wasnt for me, so called it an early night.
Next morning went straight down to Shelleys beach. This is probably one of my favourate fishing spots in WA, not because its full of fish but because its so peacefull. Always a few people camping there who are happy to have a chat about whats been happening. Got to the lookout at the top and could see id found the salmon with a small school on the way past and one guy hooked up already. Quickly down to the beach and got set up, started with a small waxwing as the next school came through, with the guy next to me using some little metal. Neigher of us got a chase so quickly swapped to baitcasting mulies for the next school which was more succesfull.
Spent the whole day chasing small schools up and down the beach with mulies outfishing the waxwing 2 to 1 and no other lures getting any interest. Fished the small patch of reef at the far end in between schools and managed a few loners out of there.
In the meantime I slid out half a salmon on the heavy gear, didnt have much hope though as it was the middle of the day and I wasnt gettting it into very deep water. While I was sliding the bait another bloke came over and asked if I was the guy getting all the big bronzies (Chrisfish your famous in Albany lol) I said no but I knew who he was talking about.
No take on the shark gear and long story short I went back and did exactly the same thing the next day except in the rain and with much fewer salmon.
Good trip, well worth the drive. Would have been good to have a serious crack at the big bronzies but was fun to change it up and get some action on the lighter stuff.
Cheers

I heard about that while I
I heard about that while I was down there I think, the saturday before I arrived or something? After spending about 5 minutes on those rocks in fairly good conditions I can tell you I wont be trying it again! I made sure I was way back from any of the wet rocks all the time and kept an eye on the swell but it still didnt feel right.

Top job
Top job mate, I agree with your tactic's, find a nice quiet peaceful bay and chase the fish.

Great effort
I totally agree with Beau- never anything "just" about a report like that. I lived in Albany for a year in the early nineties and will never forget when I finally got into the salmon. Well done loved the report.

Nice session Cuthbad!
Spots look like paradise. Been there once but never fished for salmon (weather really bad). Got a massive flattie at night from a nice beach close to the resort. Pity the slide didn't run! Cheers

Nice salmon there, there always great fun especially on the light gear. Hahaha me and my mate got a fair bit of attention even had one guy abusing us for just casting a sinker out on my rod to take up room apparently. Shame no big sharks, ah well there is always next time. Quality pictures aswell especially the lookout one.
