Just one of those days

<whinge>
Why is there no damn bait shop anywhere near woodys thats open in the morning? In fact you don't even pass one when you leave the freeway on the way down from Perth.

Why did my rod snap in the boat on the way to the ramp?

Why did this damn owner hook ping on our only good lineburner of the day?
</whinge>

Ok, that out of the way, what a nice day on the water? Almost no chop, plenty of tasty squid to take home and a fun go at some kind of serious line burner. It had over 90yds of line out on a 3kg drag at one stage. Poor Matt's PE2 Xyoga. I wonder what it was, probably a sambo.

Its why you go isn't it?

Maybe your rod snapped when you hit one of those 40ft wide potholes on the way in! That road is shocking.

Not just no bait shops, no servos anywhere near close.

Poor xzoga? Only cause the fish wasnt landed ;) Guess heavier gauge hooks are the go next time.

A few squid always go a little way in reducing the pain though.

Na the Xzoga wasn't worried, it was awfully bent though for awhile =)

The squid were great though. I ate em shallow fried after dipped into a mix of smoked paprika, salt and besan flower. Otto woofed a bunch down too. His Grandmother took a few home for brownie points too!

Serves you right....you should have been suffering at work like the rest of us!

Condolences for the rod though..that is harsh. Not even broken in battle.

Cheers Pete

Don't worry, I'll get mine soon.

My partner is going away for 12 days soon, so I'll be full-time daddy-mummy for most of that. I do get a few reprieves, my son is going down to stay at my partner's parent's place for a few days here and there.

Thats why I'm trying to fish as often as I can this week =)

Since when have I lost a fish to dodgy terminal tackle? It was Jamies jighead, and he was fighting the fish, so I didnt loose it :P Got some pics of the rod loaded up and a video (though not during the line screaming bit)

I had a tap on mine, but no hookup. Jamies just went screaming for 100+m. Just kept going and going. We thought it came off, but it was swimming back to the boat. Jamie started getting some line back, but after a few minutes, the light gauge hook broke. Bit of a reminder to use the heavier gauge jig hooks (even if they are smaller sizes) when out on the ocean. Too easy to just think about the weight and hook size.

With the weather calming up a bit, hopefully the next window you can look through damo is the viewfinder of the camera showing a nice big sambo from the capes Laughing

Sorry to hear about your rod Jamie. I share your pain

It is amazing how everything turns crappy some days.
Don't worry, the nest time you head out everything will be spot on.

Must have been the day

Wed, 2009-07-29 10:35

I went out again yesterday, the schooled dhuies were no where to be found but still got some great snapper, a humungous leatherjacket, KGW and a six foot whiskery on 10kg gear but again lost a couple of horses when hooks straightened out on 15kg string, I have an increasing issue with Youvella 4/0 suicides being simply not tempered - I think they will be permanently moved from tackle box to the rubbish bin as they have let me down too many times despite fighting fish with very soft hands !

Matt has told me off before

Wed, 2009-07-29 10:37

Matt has told me off before for using clips. Even funnier, once he rerigged my rod without a clip, while I wasn't looking.

Must find some jigheads with heavier hooks.

Might try the outside edge of the 5 Fatthom Bank next time, might be a better place to try and berley up a few sambos and whatever else?

Plenty of sambo's behind GI.

Wed, 2009-07-29 12:07

Just over FFB in around 24-26 metres of water, have been in plague proportions recently which is why I have headed deeper chasing snapper and BSB's. And yes burley will help, cubed mulies and a screw lid bait bucket filled with smashed up ones tied of the back bollard so it dips in and out ofg the water as the boat rocks .........the scent stream seems to bring em in from all parts. Only lightly tie the bucket mind.......had a mako try and take the whole thing when using nylon rope and we dang near ##$$$% ourselves when the rope wouldn't break

We were only in 10m, might try a little deeper next time!

We were berleying pretty hard, I had a bunch of fish bits to clear out of the freezer as well as all the guts from the previous squid session, and then matt was cubing pretty hard as well.

I've often worried about something trying to eat my suspended berley cage but we didn't have it that trip, the catch broke on the bottom of it.
