Karatha/Dampier

Hey fellas. I just moved up to Dampier for work and I'm absolutely stinging to get out offshore! tried a few of the creeks lately but not having much joy at all.

So was wondering if anyones got a spare spot on their boat? Obviously happy to chip in for fuel, beers, etc. Whatever it takes!

Got a bluewater background chasing marlin, yellow fin and kingfish off of the east coast so can handle a big fish but just happy to get out to sea at the moment and have a look around! I have my light tackle (sustain 4000) set up with me and some lures but could possibly get my tiagra sent over if that helps.

Craving bluewater!

Happy Fishing!

Dools.

ATM

It would suck.

Water looks cool, ie little wind for Sat and sun, But swell will make most green.

Its always the "boss" and me on the boat, but if I ask her nicely we might squize in a FW friend.

Good spot for nice big whitting (yum) ATM is Hearsons Cove (believe it or not) at high tide. Reports off some stomper size ones, but only coming up to and just after high tide. Dont fall for the beginners trick and fish there when the tide falls or the locals will piss themselves laughing at you as the water totally drain out.

Also on high chuck a bigger rig with a live whitting out and you may score anything from Rays (usually shovelies) but have a chance off a thready at this time off the year.

Oterwise land based the Sampson causeway with a outgoing tide. Use a surface lure otherwise you will get snagged. I personally like a stickbait with the standout being a Cultiva Tango dancer, But orther use a white snapback (has to be white for some reason) with a light jighead and just dont let it sink. Go there on a lowtide and see the rocks and you will know what I mean about the snags. Fishing the "inside off the causeway IMO is a waste off time.

PM me and we will see what we can do.

Cheers

Neels.

PS there is a few wreckers on here from Kcity and damps and I am sure you will get a ride. Just dont take a Iphone or mobile with you to "ping" spots and show them your empty pockets because I wont take you anywhere to "good" spots if thats the case. I have enough emergency gear on my boat and dont need another backup plan.

Get a net (cast) licence. Get a local to teach you or try the net for teckies on how to do it. Mine is basic but very wet and dirty, so I dont advise mine.

A livie up here = 100 dead baits.

Also with berley at Hearsons (chook pellets) just chuck the net and feed, but it is not for a feed, its for bait!!!! Otherwise fisheries will get you. The stompers are somehow wise to this and you get bait size anyway and I cant be bothered with them, ie they are my bait, live or dead.

Neels,

thanks heaps for the tips mate. i'll definitely give the samson causeway another shot as it does look very fishy! and hearsons sounds like a bit of fun too. what the whiting eating. peeled prawns?

and i went and got a cast net and licence the other day actually and have been learning off you tube how to cast it and seem to have the hang of it now. just dunno where to get livies from hey. what livies you get from hearsons? heard whitnell has garfish cruising round so maybe give that a shot. would love to have a couple of small mullet to chuck in at samsons but i dunno if they would survive the drive from dampier.

i think my main problem at the moment is I'm not sure which tides work best and where. but i guess that will come with time. cyclone's not helping either!

but yeah mate if you ever have a spare spot I'd love a run! and don't worry i've only got a 1980's nokia brick that barely works!

thanks mate.

With a cast net you can get livies almost anywhere, but the dirtier YOU get, ie mudd, the better your chance of Mullet. The net around backbeach will get you all sort of bait, and as the tide moves out, the system empties and there is a shallow channel just towards the north of the Ramp, and you will get mullet there etc.

I am lazy and its a longish walk to the creeks, but thats Mullet country ++.

Even Hearsons at high tide with a cast net is good for livies.

Best to fish rising to high and briefly after at Hearsons/Backbeach or any shallow area. Causeway definitely run out tide, ie from High to low. I recon its a waste off time the other way around.

won't be this weekend as there is another low heading south so the boats are staying in the shed until next week, maybe the long weekend will hold out for me.

Hey Dools, might be a good idea to join one of the fishing clubs (or at least come along for a beer). Usually a good night talking fishing and usually a "theme" to learn some tricks from the gurus.

ok game on! went to hearsons

Sat, 2011-02-26 11:06

ok game on! went to hearsons yesterday arvo and heaps of livies there ay. garies, mullet, herring. so yeah grabbed a couple of them and put a couple out the back but no hits. did see a decent size queenie (pretty sure but coulda been a GT) chasing a gar fish all over the place. so looks like there are some fish there. will give it another go soon. had a couple of quick casts for whiting and managed a small one. but was too excited at finally having some livies to think about fishing for whiting. caught a bird too which grabbed one of my livies out of the water. that was fun

anyone caught any decent fish with livies, or even lures, off the beach at hearsons?

With persistence you will

But coastal up here is very tide dependant, and also needs a little luck. But when we came up with no boat had no choice but to explore. Hearons easy to get to so gave it a shot. Have had heaps off hits and runs, mostly Rays and other ooglies, but also a couple of decent giant threadies, with Jills one going just under 1m on the mat. Both very Yum and IMO better taste than Barra by far.

Samson marina

Sat, 2011-02-26 11:27

Last time I was at Samson I saw heaps of Guardies and Mullet crusing around the marina and if you keep walking round the marina to the entrance of the causway there looks like some good spots to throw a livey out.... I have also been told there have been a few Barra caught there.... The times I have fished there I have had some nice Jacks on hard body lures but also lost a load of tackle on the snags.... If you have transport and can travel down to 40 mile beach that too is good... also try Cleaverville, about 10k's after the Nickol river heading for P. Samson and turn left then another 10-15k's along that track... had a stonker Blue Bone there plus heaps of other stuff.... These places are well knowen so gets quite a hammering... Good luck....
