Insane...just insane, have heard report of a tinnie on a roof, tree's down, roof's off, caravan flipped over, powerlines, so many windows just exploding....just great to hear nobody was hurt, although i heard a 13yo girl was blown down the street but that one I'm not sure!!!
My mate rang me about 5 mins after it hit and said a roof landed in his yard and he doesn't know who it belongs to!!!!
Was towing my boat out to the LIA to put it to bed and saw it coming. Heart was in my mouth and kept looking in the mirror to check she was still there. Wild alright!!!
mates place copped it and he had a caravan flip over, a full skip bin and his work car flipped over too. But the house was spared unlike Pabury way where roofs were lost, windows smashed etc. Poor effort by the SES and Shire, local residents ringing up and all they wanted to do was help the shop owners, not the home owners. Didn't even get one official come down the street to see what could be done. All we wanted was a truck to dump debris in or at a minimum the tip opened to get rid of everything.
A number of roads have been closed including: - North West Coastal Highway from Pannawonica turn off to Madigan Road - North West Coastal Highway from Port Hedland to Karratha - Gibb River Road from Derby to Wyndham - Marble Bar Road from Newman to Port Hedland - Ripon Hills Road - Nanutarra-Munjina Road from Bingarn Road to Youngaleena - Nanutarra-Munjina Road from Paraburdoo-Tom Price Road to Bingarn Road
Motorists should avoid the area and should not drive into water of unknown depth and current.
At Carnarvon, 910km north of Perth, the Gascoyne River's peak was among the highest ever recorded on Saturday because of rain from Cyclone Dianne.
This week, the town is expected to be affected by the re-formed Cyclone Carlos, which is now a category two storm.
After moving over the Top End from the east, Cyclone Carlos is expected to move west, southwest roughly parallel to the Pilbara coast and intensify over the next two days, the Bureau of Meteorology says.
A cyclone warning is current for coastal areas in or near Pardoo to Mardie including Pardoo, Port Hedland, South Hedland, Whim Creek, Roebourne, Wickham, Point Samson, Roebourne, Karratha, Dampier, Mardie and surrounding communities.
Parts of Port Hedland have tonight been told to 'prepare to relocate' as homes could be impacted by the cyclone.
Tornado hits Karratha
Meanwhile a mini-tornado has damaged buildings and cars in the Pilbara town of Karratha as residents there brace for more heavy weather bearing down with tropical cyclone Carlos.
The 10-minute burst of destructive winds hit just before 3pm on Monday with residents reporting cars being thrown about, roofing iron ripped off, power lines brought down, fences smashed and other debris blown about.
Cmon guys fair go. SES resources in Karratha are pretty stretched and undermanned and have been trying to recruit new volunteers all the time. Remember they are volunteers.
sad thing was Busted Arse the guy next door to my mate works for FESA and we had volly firies there as they are mates so they are to be commended. Horizon power was on the spot ASAP but no one from the shire or SES to prioritise and help with a cleanup which was poor, it was two streets out of the whole town what would happen if it was a whole suburb, sorry it was poor on the Shire's behalf and everyone there lending a hand agreed. We placed countless calls to the SES who told us to ring the shire, rang them who told us to ring the SES, no response....
Wouldn't have been so bad if we didn't have Carlos bearing down and that's why it's poor, so much litter and debris lying around ready to be picked up and thrown around town now and i hope we escape this wihtout more damage to these houses. Needless to say i'll be back tomorrow with a trailer to help where i can.
Fair call bruce. I have no idea of the circumstances that occurred at the scene. Nor do I have any idea of the situation with Karrathas SES. I was told that Newman SES mobilized a team today to come to karratha. Maybe there's nobody or not enuff volunteers in karratha SES to respond?
in Karratha been on red alert since last night, they are prepared and battened down for the worst, they are more worried about the very highest tide for the year. She reckons how come two ruddy poms from Newcastle ended up in Karratha sitting out a cyclone hahahaha, glad she has a sense of humour and something to write home to the relatives later on.
Was at home in Dampier when the Tornado hit Karratha, fortunately we didn't cop the brunt of the tornado but the rain, thunder and lightning was the most intense I've ever seen - deafening. Apparantly lightning hit one of the workshop roofs at EII and set fire.
To put it into perspective, the houses here are built to withstand severe tropical cyclones. Here's the tornado scale from BoM website.
Rating Wind speed km/h Expected damage F0 64-116 Damage to chimneys and windows. Branches torn off trees. F1 117-180kph Roof peels off. Caravans bowled over. Cars pushed off roads. F2 181-253kph Roofs torn off houses; large trees snapped or uprooted F3 254-332kph Roofs, some walls torn from well constructed houses; most trees in forest uprooted. F4 333-418kph Well-constructed buildings levelled. Cars thrown, large missiles generated. F5 over 418kph Strong frame houses lifted, carried and disintegrated; Steel-reinforced buildings severely damaged.
Absolutely laziest CAT 2 cyclone ever. Hardly was a CAT 1 over Karratha. Had the "eye" go over us, if you'd call it that, 1 hour where there was hardly a breeze.
Tail end was a lot better, with quite a bit more wind, but of course, BOM/FESA called the all clear.

Was tying the boat down in the rain and then thought F this, and sheltered.
