Gday lads I never just targeted kg's before and wanna give em a bit of a crack with my kids this year , I've caught a few before just as by catch when bottom bashing for demersal's but not in great numbers ,can anyone help out with a good depth as a starting point ? I know fresh squid is usually a great bait but any other tips anyone wants to share would be much welcomed, cheers

32meters is the sweet spot
32meters is the sweet spot behind G.I. we do catch them deeper but not as consistent. Flat ground lots of bye catch, footballers, rock cod, rass. We don't get them on long drifts, we hit them then nothing. I'd say they hang between the broken ground . My top tip is use fresh squid then ghost cotton it on tight. Good luck it's worthwhile

Good info Live, we've found
Good info Live, we've found the same. Weedy broken ground in 30-35m, I always run a light rig for the purpose of KG's and the by catch is usually pretty good with Breaksea and Baldies. The ghost cotton idea is something I'll take on board.

We found the 30 mtrs Mark
We found the 30 mtrs Mark behind garden island around 3/4 the way along from point peron quite good . If you get on a patch generally you will find them there again. We used to get them up to a kilo on a regular basis. Havnt fished there for years tho . Smelled 2/0 hook with half squid (lunds)

If you havent fresh squid
If you havent fresh squid (and I mean FRESH) then use prawns.
I also found a running bead in green or red seems to work well.
Not sure where youre based but the weedbeds north of Mindarie have always been good to me.

Big tip ( if drifting)
Never drag them away from where you first hook up. If you do long drifts ( once found) you seperate school big time. Drop catch straight back .

Don't needt to be deep
Don't needt to be deep plenty of big KG in shallow water when you can see the bottom, anchor up in sand patches and cast beside the weed I like to have a bit of colour at top of hook usually a red bead. Even yesterday in 5 meters the wife bagged several KG's over 40cm's. My tip for the day is to drop a squid jig hanging down by the motor, surpriseng how many squid can be caught.

Great advice...
Great advice and knowlede on this site. I have caught some ripper Kg's out behind Garden Island. 30 to 35 m. Small hooks 1/0 to 4/0 with skinned occy or squid.
Definatley short drifts..
Google Cleggies KG rig. He showed me back in the 80's. Was a guru.

PS
Have caught plenty of Dhuies, Baldies, Blackass, and most other species off Perth, and still rate the big KG's as one of the best on the plate...

Let me know when you have it
Let me know when you have it sussed,I reckon they are hardest fish to master and get good hauls consistently.
