King George Whiting

Hey folks

Looking for some help to put the odds in my favour when targeting KGWs. Not wanting your secret spots or gps co-ords but rather what has been working for you in terms of rigs, baits, depth of water etc

Could I get some comments on what I've read and noted so far.

Rigs - paternoster, 2 circle hooks size 4, pyramid sinker

Water depth - > 8m smaller species and > 20m for larger varieties

Ground - Look for broken ground near reefs

Bait - fresh squid, coral prawns

The one thing I've not been able to pick up reading is time of day when fishing for KGs... is sunrise or sunsets better than during mid morning, midday?

And is wind direction a factor?

Appreciate some help as I've never caught a KG before.

 Hey Stumpie

A couple of the guys here actively target KGs and have a lot of success. You are on the right path in terms of shallow water fishing. However once the guys here have caught a couple of dhuies etc they will target KGs on tiny lumps and pieces of broken ground that often gets overlooked and driven over in the 30-40m mark. They usually pick up baldies and often a good dhu as well. They don't fish terribly light either. Minimum 30lb leader and either mustad tainawa hooks or Black Magic DX hooks in a 1/0 on a paternoster. Bait is fresh squid or occy and they are usually bigger specimens.

Bite times can definately help but you can pick the odd one up throughout the day.

Hope that helps, any more questions just ask mate!

Kind Regards

Yup Bluewater right on the money

But I use a par of snooded 3/0 circles on each dropper and yes baldies and some huge dhuies can also be encountered over this broken ground, real soft hands required on the lighter gear  and any by catch of western King wrasse kept and vac packed for later use as dhuie bait

Dad and I got onto some

Tue, 2017-05-02 15:32

Dad and I got onto some rippers in 4m in September and I caught them there the Sep before that too just on the edge of some broken ground off Hillarys. We just drifted till we found them and anchored up, berleyed up and cleaned up on KG and skippy. I was using 6lb line and a paternoster rig with a small tear drop sinker and 2x size 4 Owner worm hooks. This was mid morning and they came on the bite for an hour before the blowies ruined everything and were very finicky and I outfished the old boy seven to one with my 1-2kg rod compared to his 4-8kg combo.

 I've found the mustad shiner

Wed, 2017-05-03 07:07

I've found the mustad shiner hooks to work well (wrasse dont swallow them as easily). Kind of like a wide gape circle I guess. I usually drift for them and once you get one mark it and anchor. Light berley with the broken chook pellets $8 a 5kg bag at pet shops. Fresh squid, occy or cuttlefish are top baits. Anouther thing that helps is to cut bait into small strips maybe 3cm long and thread a few on so they cant strip it off as easily. A small red lumo bead above hook.  A running ball sinker or rig with sinker on dropper loop and hook bottom end will work. You'll find the ground just off reef or sometimes in close less than 10m. Any areas where you get squid are worth a shot.

Hope this helps a bit

 I like the Sure Catch

I like the Sure Catch paternosters. I used do real well in close around Freo. Last few years the big ones haven't been there. I think the salmon have eaten everything where I used to go :/

If you are drifting make the leader with your bottom hook a lot longer than you normally would so it trails behind your sinker about half a mtr.
