Kununarra Winter Barra

Hi guys, heading to Kununarra on Thursday for work and would love to catch a barra if we get time but Ive never fished for them before and have heard the cold water makes it difficult. Is it worth having a crack ? If so iv read that Ivanhoe crossing is a good place to start but are there other areas that are reasonably close and accessible ? Also is braid or mono the go for a small spin set up ? Any info at all would be greatly appreciated and fingers crossed there's a few spare hours off work :D

 Hey mate,Firstly let me just

 Hey mate,

Firstly let me just say that I'm most definitley not a barra expert, but I do know you can still get them at this time of year, despite what some people may say, you might just have to try a bit harder and use slighty different tactics to what you may use at other times of the year.

I was up in Darwin a couple of weeks ago and spent a few days chasing them for the first time. When I first got there I was chuckin 100-120 mm hard bodies & biggish soft plastics, because that's what I though the go was. After speaking to various people up there, it turns out that smaller lures are more productive, particularly during the colder months when the fish aren't as aggresive. I downsized my lures, and started throwing 4inch Z-man curl tail grubs (In motor oil and glow/pink), and 3inch gulp minnows (pearl/watermelon & nuke chicken) on a 1/8th oz jighead. Ended up hooking 7 barra, but only landed 4.

I would definitley recomend braid on your spin setup. I was running 10lb, with a 20lb flurocarbon leader.

Not the best time of year

Mon, 2014-07-21 19:36

I fished there last October and a couple of years of poor wet seasons meant fish were scarce.  Live bait seemed to be the most productive and from four attempts only saw one Barra caught at Ivanhoe.  Did Hairy Dogs charter which was well worth it and we got into a few fish, whilst he is a cranky bugger he knows the river pretty well.

Massive wet this year though so that may change things a bit.  There is a fishing report in the local rag which will let you know what's going on too.

I've seen some good pics of Barra lately from the Fitzroy so it's not impossible.

Best of luck, even if you dont catch anything it's great country.

Yeah I fished the Ord in July and pulled a few every time I tried, despite the locals telling me I was wasting my time keep changing your lures to keep them interested. And work them hard... no wobble ,no gobble !!!

livebait

Livebait is the way to go immediately below the crossing, no weight, normaly catch them in the pool on the left above the wier, watch out for the lizzards, they grow prety big up there

Was there in June and caught 50 in 2 days.  We did have a boat and was about 40km downstream from Kunno.  Mamby Island is a good spot
