Hull Repairs ?
Submitted by eltaco on Thu, 2014-07-17 12:46
Hi all after some advise on a good alluminium boat repairer around Perth . I have a quintrex 650 offshore that I bought of a mate a couple of years ago , he had an extra 200ltr fuel tank installed up front by a boat builder in perth . After a while the weight of the tank cracked all his welds and was sent back to have them redone . Now it has ripped open all his welds again and ribs have broken off , all the supports of the floor have snapped and there is a split right at the bottom of the v . If you could see these welds it's absolute shocking that someone would do this shit . I'm going to keep the tank out and need a good boat builder to see what he can do , anyone know of a good one ? Any info will be much appreciated . I'll post some pics

Fark, I can weld better than
Fark, I can weld better than that and I am not a welder. I think you need a phone number for Sims Metal rather than a boat builder. Hope you'll get it fixed.

Welding
Welding aloy is not as easy as people think, looking at the pictures , the galvianic corrosion on the aloy looks bad ,and no amount of weld put on top will ever hold or look good.
Alot of that looks like it needs to be replaced or you will continue to have problems. I recomend a professional would be the only one i would let touch that mess. I have used Marineline before and recomend them too.

Those welds are due more to
Those welds are due more to stress than shit welding. Looking at the one at the keel the weld looks sound and fused. You've done the right thing by pulling the tank out mate. Ali is a shit material by nature it gets contaminated very easily and goes brittle especially the marine grades 5085 etc. PM me if you want more info and don't find anyone.

some good some sh1t
yes some of those welds have cracked along the toe which is stress related.
there are afew sh1t looking welds and once ali is dirty its not easy (as earlier stated) to weld. In my studies ali needs to be contaminate free for a good fusion, appearance and weld wetting.
good luck with it.

Agree with Grantartic
Agree with Grantartic here..
dont want to put you off having a go at repairing it, but when these older "PRESSED" ally hulls start to go... its a very difficult thing to stop ...or fix...
as a boat builder / shipwright (with DNV and GL ally welding codes) i can say that yeh ,,, the welding isnt fantastic.. but it has little to do with the weld quality here.. looks to me like the frames where cut down to accomadate a fuel tank install, which comprimised the strength of those frames.. I see a few cracked welds but the major issue is the cracked hull plate (Metal fatigue) along with the added issue of the corrosion... it wont be a ""Quick 5 minute fix" !!!!
ive had heaps of requests to fix this kid of damage in the past..and once upon a time i would have a red hot crack at it ... (younger and stupider)
but it can take ages to get a repair that will still be very average at best...
Please post pictures of the repair when you do get it done though ...

On a side note
On a side note, looking at your pictures. The floataion blocks look like they are resting on the hull. In my oppinion this is not a good idea and i would look at placing them better. It is a common mistake that also causes corrosion and pitting on the surface of the hull. Moisture gets trapped between them and the hull with devistating results in some ceases.
They realy need to be fixed to the under floor leaving a gap for air between them and the hull. Just some advice if you are trying to sort out why you are getting all that corrosion.
As Luke said, they have removed important frame work to fit the tank and i would be getting it replaced if you are not putting the tank back in. All these factors combined have contributed to the overall problem.
Best of luck mate, and would be keen to find out how you go with the repairs.
Cheers Grant .

+1 - How the tank itself was
+1 - How the tank itself was mounted as far as what it was in contact with (and the material of the tank), would be another consideration with any past or future issues

Cheers for the info will let
Cheers for the info will let yas know how I go , they should spray a really durable coating like rhino coat on the inside from brand new , would stop a lot of corrosion if it didn't react to the alloy.
