Cracking fish

You know macks are getting big when they start getting that prominent white belly strip.

Good surface strike?

What a monster mac! Did you subdue him using GT Tackle ?

You are pretty lucky to land him if you are not using wire.

V\That's a beast, would have gone hard! What's the go with a fish that size? Are they still safe to eat because of a toxin build up?   if it were caught in WAit would be all right, that ciguatera problem in mackerle seems to be  confined to NT/Qld in Australia. I have personally caught 35 and 37KG spaniards at Ningaloo and eaten them with no ill effects. Wouldn't consider killing the big girls nowadays if they look healthy. We  were sharked on one last year at Ningaloo, took  off the back half at the front of the anal fin , plus a big bite out of the back, rermains weighed 20KG. So it was easily a 30kg fish. And we shared it around, no ill effects.

Mackerel are OK in some areas and not in others, Some reef areas, you can't east ANY size mackerel, in others they are all OK. if you didn't know, Ciguatera poisoning is caused by a toxin which comes from a blue-green algae which is ingested by small reef dwellers. Doesn't harm them, but stays in their system. These, in turn, are eaten by larger reef fish, who accumulate it in their system. How they manage the issue of mackerel migrating between areas is beyond me. I've seen quite recent posts on the Ausfish forum speculating about it being present in smallish mackerel in Moreton Bay.
