Lewmar winch not dropping anchor
Submitted by black gen on Sun, 2019-05-26 17:23
Have a lewmar 700 series and today it would retrieve the anchor no dramas but wouldn’t let me drop the anchor down. Was occasionally tripping the fuse on the way down
would let out about 300mm of chain then not go any further
just wondering if anyone had the same problem
seems to be an issue with the clutch maybe
found it weird that it would drag the anchor in no drama but couldn’t drop it down at all had to do it manually
any pointers be much appreciated

Sounds like it might be the freespool mechanism.
There is a few videos on YouTube on stripping if that helps.

The 700 series doesn't feature free fall an
The only way to make it free fall is to manually release the clutch using the tool provided. I have the same windlass and had a couple of issues with the chain links locking preventing them from feeding out correctly and that might be what is happening to you, when it stops visually check the chain beneath the clutch mechanism, I solved my issue by replacing the chain with better quality chain where the links moved freely, only issue I have is I put 25 metres of chain on and it struggles a little when it is all hanging vertically on retrieve as it is bloody heavy

Wrong sunshine although I'm not sure what model he has.
The 700 is available in freefall it's called the profish.you must have the pro series which is the same as mine.power in/power out or as you state loosen the nut with a half inch ratchet. Both very easy units to work on

Meant to add
I also bought and installed a high quality swivel as I noted the chain seemed to be twisting and that was causing links to lock up .......so either the new chain or swivel solved my issues

Then I would check as suggested
As the problem you are experiencing mirrored what I had happening

Reversing solenoid?
All the power out winches I've seen rely on a reversing solenoid to power out. If this goes bad, could be your problem. Look at it, especially see where it is mounted. I've seen people mount the bloody things inside the anchor well, they are not waterproof and won't last too long in there.
