Loading backing onto a reel

G'day all, I've got all the line I need to spool up my Okuma for jigging. I've got some 24kg platypus nylon line for backing and want to top it up with 50lb Whiplash. Whats a good way of knowing how much backing to put on before getting on the full 300yds of whiplash?

Cheers
Dale

By putting it on backwards?

By putting it on backwards?

What I do is tie a leader to the spool, tie the braid on, spool that all up, then the backing so its on top. Next trick to to reverse it but having a spare high-capacity spinning reel around makes that easy.

If you dont have colour

If you dont have colour marked braid, and dont have a spare spool, then tie a short few m section of mono to your braid via any old knot and wind it on, then when you get to the end of your braid, tie on your mono backing with any old knot and fill to where you want. Then reverse off the mono, and cut the knot, then reverse off the braid onto another spool. Now you can put the mono backing on, tie a decent knot to your braid, wind on your braid, then tie on your leader.

Much easier with a spare spool of course. If you havent allready got the braid, a tackle shop should be able to load it up for you (perhaps even using a spare same sized spool as you have). Btw, some people say that whiplash will break slightly below what its rated at, so if you've already bought the spool, make sure you use decent knots (no uni to unis).

spool-up!

I'd get a tackle shop to do it for ya Dale, they should have the same size spool to get the exact amount required as mentioned!

I would tie a small bimini in your Whiplash braid (my fav) and do a double uni to your backing....works well for me and have never had an issue....ever!

Yeah I thought of that Ryan,

Yeah I thought of that Ryan, but my reel is an Okuma Salina Jigging reel and I dont think anyone here has them as I imported it from Taiwan. Maybe the spool is the same size as the Salina's they sell here.

if!

If they dont have an Okuma spool similar then a spool up on yours then a reversal onto a plastic spool then back onto your reel will do the job!

The shop machine puts in on even & tight.....a must!

Take it to a tackle shop to

Take it to a tackle shop to get spooled up. They will be able to do a reversal and get the amount of backing spot on and have your braid filled all the way to the lip of the spool.
