locating the wrong places to drill?

Hey. I want to mount a berley bucket onto the transom. what I don't want to do is drill mounting holes through the transom only to find them right next to a stringer without enough room to fit a washer and nut and be left with an unnecessary hole to fill / repair. any tricks of the trade to knowing there is enough clearance to drill when access to the inside is purely by feel though a porthole hatch and not visual?

Maybe drill higher...

...so the hardware is above the stringers? I guess that would depend on how far down your bucket goes below the bottom bolt. Assuming you want the bottom of the bucket below the waterline?

Or use a ruler and your sense of feel to locate a sufficient gap between stringers.

Or do what I do and just jig, cast and troll, so no berley required!

Yeah I think i know what you mean....  The bucket is taller than the aft deck which is very close to water line anyway.  The bottom of the bucket will just be above the bottom of the hull so there is no drag on the plane.  There is one longitudinal stringer at deck level that I can feel that concerns me and also a couple of vertical longitudinal frames.... so it's a sideways issue as well if you can picture that.

Your going to need some sort

Your going to need some sort of access to get that nut on the end of the bolt aren't you.  Once you have access you'll have a fair idea where the stringers are - just work it out from there (measure thrice and cut (drill) once)

Or am I missing something??  :-)

I have access with one arm

Mon, 2015-02-02 20:19

I have access with one arm through a port hole hatch on the tiller flat in front of the motor.  but it's hard to guage on the inside what reference point (on the outside) I am measuring against.  The port hole hatch is only big enough to get one arm though so it is all measurement by feel once my hand is inside.

Camera

Mon, 2015-02-02 20:22

Can you poke your camera or phone in there and take a pic?
Will give you a better idea of whats in there and might give you a reference point you can work from to find a clear area.

That said when I had my Genesis I just stuck my arm in thru the hatch and used feel and a good guess.

The general shape is very similar to the genesis and the feel and guestimate is what I might resort to.  The camera is a good idea as a safety net. :)

Just checked and all good.

Just checked and all good. I can get them to stick through the top of my desk which is 18mm thick.

They also have a 6mm hole in the middle so you can drill a pilot hole exactly in the centre.

They're your's for nix if you want them..
