One of my first trips out of
One of my first trips out of Hedland I had a Torium come loose in the rocket launcher and bounce over the side. I really loved that reel.
Found a bag full of fishing gear on the beach at Drummonds Cove. Been there for a while as the plastic bags had all but dissintigrated. Lots of sinkers, hooks and a few lures. May as well been gold to a 10 year old with no money though.
Picked up a plough anchor off one of the Hedland islands a couple of months ago too.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

Was once out trolling on the 3 mile and passed a 68cm out there floating around, that one got us scratching our heads. Found half a yellow wheelie bin out drifting 6 mile out off ocean reef. We pulled it in and back at the ramp a red shirt came up to us asking to record our catch all we had to show was the wheelie bin.... he was tellin us another bloke had pulled the other half in th day before up at mindarie.

Outboard motor
While working as a pro shark fisherman off Naturaliste pulled up a 7.5hp outboard motor, looked like it had been there for quite a while. Rang a pro mate fishing out of Two Rocks to tell him and he said he had got one the same only a couple of days before my find.
Was standing along side of a mate on South Conto beach when he poked his rod in the sand and reached in to his pocket for his smokes and matches his rod took off, by the time we had taken 3 steps it was 5/6 metres in front of us and in less than 5 seconds it was in the surf 30 metres and out of sight never to be seen again. It was a 12 foot Butterworth with a Mitchell 499 on it.

Pulled up a rod and reel in
Pulled up a rod and reel in the middle of Walpole inlet when I was a kid, few barnicals but cleaned it up and use it. Found a kayak anchor out off woodies point while snorking for crabs a few months ago with a long rope attached.. but no yak to be seen! Wasn't easy swimming back with an anchor in hand while trying to nab more crabs.

Found plenty
Fishing at Molloy Island earlier this year, caught a whole rod and reel out of a snag. Diving in the sound in just the last 6 months I have found 3 crab pots sans floats, a bag full of stainless steel crab bait clips, a snorkle and a mask.
Lost three flippers, one just the other night to a broken heel strap clip.

Cant remember who this was
Cant remember who this was (Lamby perhaps?) who said they were crabbing (in the sound I think) and some bastard had pulled up all their pots and stolen all the stainless steel bait hooks. They didnt bother to steal the pots though (but probably took any crabs). Guessing not the same clips of course, haha.
As for flippers, my dad lost a flipper once at city beach (one of a few over the years though) and a month or so later found one I think at scarborough beach, same size, same model. We were wondering if it was indeed the same fin (but was a reasonably popular model and was against which way the currents were at the time, so coulda been someone else who lost one). As for me loosing fins in the surf: thats what flipper savers are for (and have saved them a few times).
Luckily i've never lost any gear overboard, but I did once go whiting fishing and had a cheap rod/reel combo, went to remove a hook from a whiting on gf's line, turn around and the damn thing had dissapeared. I had no idea where it was, but after giving up finding it and assuming it was on the bottom of the ocean, I spyed a sinker up against the gunnel with rod and reel still attached. So almost lost, but recovered. Thats the closest i've been to finding anything decent. Have been land based where someone else has found a lure once or twice though. Also, a worn five dollar note some time. And also broken junk gear at moore river on the riverbanks (including a thin cane rod that felt a lot closer to thin modern rods than I thought they made them).

On the tide
mark 26 miles out from Leeman, old fart& mate found a Japanese long line bouy and attached was heaps of 10o tuna circles hooks on the line, on stainless leads, with stainless clips, looked like it been floating for quite awhile, had them all in his tackle box that was stolen. Saw a nice big glass bouy, with mesh still on, old fart should have picked that one up as it would be worth a few bob today. Another trip found 6 cast iron floats, got them hanging on the tree at the side of the house. Then the usualy heaps of pro crayfish bouys as well
Still have the big bouy, hanging in the car port, made in Norway.

Dragged up
Dragged up a twenty dollar note in a prawn net at Canning Bridge about 35 years ago.
Caught a school shark while long lining in the Bass straight and found it had swallowed a small can of baked beans. Opened the can up and the beans looked OK.
Found a Dutchman floating at the Abrolhos Islands 30 years ago. Had drowned after a night on the turps and had outboard problems with his dingy.

Crayfishing..
...out of Two Rocks, pulling a group of five pots on the bank and noticed a big cat with three people aboard fishing amongst them. Returned the next day, pulled the pots, discovered a bit of mono attached to one of them. Pulled that in to find a brand new Alvey reel/rod outfit, snapped off at the butt. They must've snagged a pot, stuck the rod in a holder, and driven off, trying to snap the line. 100 pound line plus 50 pound rod...well you can do the maths!
While diving off of Mandurah a couple years ago, trying to unsnag a pot, discovered a clear plastic box with a pair of good sunnies, a dive watch, a stubby holder, a really big padlock with two keys (worth $115 at Bunnings) and a cray loop nearby. We reckon some thieving pricks tried to pull our snagged pot from a dinghy, the whole thing would've tilted to one side, and the gear would've been sitting on the gunwhale only to slide off into the drink.
Losses? Losing a good pair of pliers while trying to unhook a fish...was doing it over the side of the boat, pinched myself with the pliers, and let go out of pain/reflex!
And several cheap outfits when the kids hooked something big and simply let go!

no good finds for me just
no good finds for me just the odd anchor and once an old roller rod with a penn senator on it, salavged the rod and made attempts to rebuild it but it got too hard.
Losses for me was a brand new TR200G reel and 10kg rod that i had set up for a beach fish out camping, even had the bell on the rod, decided to leave it in free spool without the ratchet on, finished dinner and 15 mins later there is a drag mark into the water where my rod and reel where. saved 200 bucks as a 16 year old to buy it too.
Almost lost a TLD20 and 15kg rod over the side when a rod holder on my canopy snapped, collected me on the head and just bounced in the boat only a few months back

I've lost 2 reef anchors,
I've lost 2 reef anchors, both when the shackle came undone.
I also have lost 2 Berkeley lip grips, one when a friends Uncle tried to use them on an eel, the eel rolled up the grips and hit his hand causing him to drop them into the water. The other one was my fault, I was trying to swim a Rankin with the grips when it kicked my hand and I let go.
I've also lost a few bait knives, the funniest one was when I caught a sargent baker and it flicked the knife off the bait board and just missed a mates head before going into the water, a sea gull had a peck at it just before it sank.
On the recent Exxy trip Amanda dropped her $200 sunnies in the water.
So far I've found nothing, I must be due soon

Keys
I once dropped a set of keys on the beach and couldn't find them in the sand. The next weekend we were at the same spot and a guy came past with a metal detector and dug them up about 3 feet from where we were!

Anchors, mast mainsail and a heap of rope
Literally tonnes of gear - the oddest though was a 40foot mast complete with mainsail on the bottom in the middle of Cockburn Sound several years ago whilst diving for scallops (before the imfamous "little"CSBP cyanide spill which wiped them out) carefully removed the ropes which were perfect.
Oh yes and a real pearl from an oyster - we took two oysters that day and both contained pearls one perfectly egg shaped and one heart shaped -

nice find
Wow... those pearls would be worth a mint now hey!!!
now my big finds...
I was crabbing in a local creek and found a Calcutta 400 and a rod, what a score. We were pretty terped up so it was a well deserve score sadly no crabs.
I have also found a 12ft beach rod out in 48 fathoms off tqo rocks with a reel attached..that was a good score.
I also have found a full large Plano tackle box while fishing with a mate off Sea bird was full of everything.
My best catch was a 16ft Quintrex on the beach south of Seabird. Someone stole the boat from Quindalup drove it for the day and then let it loose and it washed up 6 days later in Seabird. We called the Police and was all fixed up and returned to the owner.

Sherbs and I were fishing at one of our favourite tailor spots
one day. We had done an overnighter so we had the prime spot when the crowd turned up just after sunrise.
Anyway, this one guy came along and didn't seem too impressed that we were in the gun spot on this rock wall and were pulling in a few tailor. He managed to squeeze his way passed a few people and grab a spot near the end of the wall, but all he managed to hook was a heap of snags. After grumbling and swearing for about an hour he hooked another snag and completely lost it. He grabbed the end of his custom built rod and smashed it again the rocks a few times and then threw the whole outfit in the water and stormed off.
The best part was that an hour or so later and old dude fishing on the beach hooked onto something good, and dragged in the guys outfit. The rod was stuffed, but with a good clean out the reel would have been ok. That old guy was pretty chuffed (No Russ, the old guy wasn't Sherbs, Lol).

Dog
While i was fishing near sugarloaf rock down south a couple of years ago i watched a guy go onto a rock we wouldnt fish due to the odd swell breaking over it. But down trundled this guy with a rod in i hand and a tackle box and bait in the other with his trusty blue healer in tow. It wasnt too long he was fishing and i watched a wave come and sweep all his gear including his dog off the rocks and int the sea only to be amazed as the next wave brought the dog back up on the rocks next to him. He was smart enought to call it a day after that HOW LUCKY CAN YOU GET

Fishing down the ammo jetty
Fishing down the ammo jetty one night, had a guy walk over my 6500 on an original powertip and hook his shoe on it. Needless to say the rod went in the drink, so I tied up a treble on another rod and managed to jag the line of the reel and pulled the rod up, good save. I've also found numerous tackle boxes on rocks. Also acored a halco scorpion while fishing the bottom at north mole.

story of the lost clips
the oldies have a house down mandurah on the canals we always got some decent crab off the little jetty we had and catching soapie mulloway at night 30-35cm good fun on the light gear over the years of putting out crab nets of the jetty we managed to loose a few clips and i was scratching my head as to how..... then one day overcast stormy wheather water moving around usually stirrs up some nice manna's put out 5 nets with snapper heads and tuna heads on clips, came back 15minutes later to find 4 of my clips had gone. couldnt believe it..
decided to get some good ol wire coat hanger tied em up real good. after resetting the pots no more than two minutes seen something trying to take off with my pot i was like wat the ***k a stingray 5 foot across the wings decided to play tug o war with the jetty for a while before letting go. thats when i got sick of eagle rays and started hitting up the real deal of putting out bonito and salmon heads for bait.
makes sence though if a stingray wants whats in your pot and all you have is a clip wouldnt take much to rip it off, like that seal down the ammo jetty he was the biggest theif.....
