Lowance hdi or hds for dedicated gps

Is it worth spending the extra money for the hds? Or anyone using the hdi more than happy with its features... will only be used for a gps and getting a furuno for a sounder. Just not sure how much more detail you get with the hdi in regards to the gps side? Will be hds7 or hdi7

Elite HDI

Can't speak for the HDS gen 3 as haven't seen them in action but nothing wrong with the Elite HDI chart plotter. Easy to use/read and pretty good screen update speed when zooming. Main advantage of HDS is all the fruit you can hook up to it if you're that way inclined; radar, auto pilot, structure scan, music, etc. Pretty sure Elite has narrower scope for optional add-ons.

 You should get the same

You should get the same detail mapping wise so that part is ok. The HDS has more options etc. but in this case they will not be needed.

Have you considered a dedicated Furuno GPS instead? You could then link the two units together. I've done this with my two HDS units. One has the map screen and another has structure scan. If I find a spot I can mark it on the sounder and the other unit shows the mark popping up allowing me to navigate back to it without having the change screens etc. without linking you have to mark the spot roughly and it's even less accurate if it's a mark on side scan.

I think you said that

on another post some time ago.  My Furuno Navnet runs Navionics, no problem.  I think you may find that Cmaps is standard with most Furunos sold in WA but that does not necessarily mean other options are not available.

 The older furuno units came

The older furuno units came pre-programmed to run one or the other navionics/c-map. You can change via a software update but i think it needs to be done by a dealer. I asked Taylor Marine to swap my NavNet VX2 to Navioincs but they werent too keen.

I was about to buy the 1670

I was about to buy the 1670 and did some reading and it only refered to Cmap so I rang the Taylor Marine tech and he confirmed they only run Cmap. Ended up buying a HDS7
