Lower Ord Barra

Been fishing the Ord around the Diversion Dam of late. The wild weather has knocked the fish around.....

One week the water temp is up over 28 C then next week its done to 25-26 C as cold water is flowing out of the dam. The early wet is also knocking things around.....

Even the local guru's are struggling.

I got an invite to hit the lower Ord and seeing I was keen to do more exploring I was not going to say no. There was three in my boat and we were following some Wyndham locals in their boat.

Launched at 6am and steamed the 40kms to the lower Ord. It's big distance travel out of Wyndham down Cambridge Gulf.....

After a very windy Saturday we were greeted with calm conditions. Something to relish here as the Cambridge Gulf is notorious for real choppy water generated from competing tides and wind. Tides, this end of town range up to about 9m, and can push hard enough that a 15hp motor will not move forward...... So one uses the tide to travel to conserve fuel and time.

The Kimberley is vast so one has to accept such consessions when chasing Barra but the country is spectacular; that in itself is worth the travel.

Hit the Lower Ord and being the first excursion into unknown country decided to stay around the junction with the Gulf. Needless to say there was very fishy habitat.

Nick scored the only Barra of the day. At 57cm it was a keeper and fell to a Lively mullet lure. Bob scored some Treadies but all released. I skippered all day but still happy with the learning curve offered by the locals.

So much water to explore.........

A few pictures from the day.

Nicks fish, silver and came up well for dinner.

Expansive mudflats but we just missed the runout tide.....

fishy gutters

Big distance travel is required.

Looking forward to the upcoming trips to the Lyn were the big Barra lurk.

Nice work Damo. Did you hear about the boat that rolled on its mooring Sat night up near Lacrosse Island?

make sure you achor safely......

No injuries though from what I heard as the crew were sleeping up on the hardtop?...

I hope the quinnie at the local engineering shop didn't result in injury as it took a big hit by the look of the bow.

Heading out Saturday from the Diversion if your keen.

Rude awakening

Mon, 2010-11-15 19:43

Be a rude awakening for sure. Was on the news down south how they had to swim the upturned boat back to shore, would need eyes in your bum looking for crocs. Wouldn't think sleeping on top of a 6 metre boat cabin is a real top idea, would do wonders for its stability.

Not a great way to wake up!

Gonna give the dam a bash Friday arvo with a mate from work. I'll let you know if I pull anything decent.

a mate from work scored well on the weekend

Mon, 2010-11-15 19:46

fished the D4 rapids landbased and pulled plenty of fish. But nothing between 55-80cm.

plenty under and plenty over up to a meter.........all on lures

Better follow him in Wink

there's plenty of fish below the dam but as they release cold water from Lake KNX it drops the river temp. Went out with a mate from work last weekend and hooked some fish all below the powerlines.... warmer water and tarpon everywhere
