Lucanus Jigs

Never used em before. Seen them catch fish!

Keen to try some in 30m for pinkies.

Just want some feedback, and help with colours and weights

Good Jigs

Sun, 2011-07-03 12:12

But just use them much slower than standard jigs. Almost leave them in the rod holders and let the boat work them. If glass just a gentle up and down lift motion.

Cheers

Neels

Leaving them in the rod

Sun, 2011-07-03 12:20

Leaving them in the rod holders is not really my thing, unless I've put the rod down to grab another beer from the esky, in which case, I'll claim it.. haha.

But like Neels said, just a slow gentle up and down lift seems to do the trick.. except when I was up north Rankins seemed to love them worked quickly for some reason?

I prefer to upgrade the hooks, a single Owner SJ41 seems to do the trick and it only takes some assist cord and a couple of minutes to change them out. Gives you a bit of extra security when you wanna put the brakes on a good demersal.

60 and 80g are ample for that

Sun, 2011-07-03 12:26

60 and 80g are ample for that depth, they sink like stones.

work brilliantly on snapper

can be fished dead stick left in rod holder or similar to a plastic few violent jerks and let it rest.

often a bit of stimulate/s-factor on the jig will entice a bite upon lowering into the school.

has accounted for plenty big reds for me here in SA, my favourite colours being chartreuse white and pink.

this fish took a blue lucanus after two "jigs", 2-5kg raider finesse on 8lb sensor

Guys I tried them in several depths at shark bay this year, from turtle bay, inside the bay and at steep point, I have most weights and several colours but I couldn't raise 1 fish with them.not sure if it's because I was using them wrong or not but I was devo. Yet we chucked baits down and everything from big baldies, rankin and spangs smashed us???

Try a bit of s-factor or similar should work a treat. Were you dead stickin or moving?
Some days the fish will only take bait and vice versa. Often the lucanus will outfish bait and plastics when fishing is slow.
I will cast away from boat or drop down let it hit the bottom and then give it a few violent shakes/lifts then let sink and keep repeating.
Most reef dwelling species can't resist em here in SA so shouldn't have a problem over there. One tip though use the lightest size possible that will get to the bottom as they sink like stones anyway.

Tried em, very boring and uninvolving. Prefer jigs and plastics, much more angler input. They are better than bait though (in terms of angler input, not catching fish.......).

Can fish em exactly like plastics mate plenty of angler involvement
I never deadstick em defeats the purpose if you ask me, same as deadsticking plastics
You can be quite vigorous in your action and still entice a bite
