Nth Metro dhufish/snapper

Hi all,
im new to the site, have been struggling over the years to catch a dhufish or snapper of legal size. I have a 5.2m boat and i go out from hillarys, been to rotto before a couple of times. I read reports of people catching them at the 3 mile reef or hale road reef, but i have tried on so so many occasions and can only get small ones (if any) amongst a whole heap of wrasse etc. Others tell me to go deeper and just find a lump but it seems once you go past the 3 mile reef the bottom is flat the whole way out. The depth sounder has never picked up anything other than a gentle gradient getting progressively deeper. Trying in 30m of water i only get whiting and juvenile snapper to about 30cm. I have looked everywhere for one of these 'lumps' but cannot find anything.
Just wondering with the demersal closure ending can anyone please give me a tip or something to find some decent dhufish or snapper territory given i head out from hillarys.
Cheers, happy fishing

sound around a couple of the pro cray pots mate, get an idea of what the ground looks like, then go and find your own, dont fish the pots usually ends in snagging the pot, and not fair on the deckys pulling the pots, and everyone has probably tried fishing there as well, try and find more broken bottom and smaller isolated lumps, they dont have to be huge a 1 metre lump will hold fish

but if you fish around pots and tangle up it is worth buying a roll of caution take from bunnings and tie it on the line between the last couple of floats so they can have a warning that something is up.

You don't have to go to all that trouble. Just tie a shopping bag or piece of rag securely to the rope on the first float or tie the floats together so they can see it was done deliberately

in the air intake on an old boat i dont allow them on the new one.The roll of tape is 20 meters cost about $5 and will last me a lifetime.Only need a 1/2 a meter per pot and havent opened it yet so off to a good start. It doesnt bellow out in the current either just lays flat on the surface.

if you're getting heaps of wrasse , you're likely on top of the reef in sh1t fish country. you can anchor and burley over the edge of the reef or as above and check around pots for ground. there is a lot of flat sand in the 30's that the little whiting and flathead love, but just time spent sounding around and you'll find the odd lump. maybe head further afield but no pinging hey!

No pinging????

Mon, 2010-12-13 22:08

Thanks for the advice guys, which I'm sure is just as relevant south of Mandurah as it is around Hillarys. I'm pretty good at catching wrasse, so maybe I'm closing in on my first jewie!!

Also, I've seen it mentioned here before but don't understand the meaning of the term 'pinging'...grayzeee, what did you mean by 'no pinging'??

regards

The term " pinging " relates

The term " pinging " relates to wankers pulling up beside you in the middle of the ocean, and pinging your spot.

As you are aware rusty it takes a lot of time and effort to find decent ground, so when you are drifting over your spot and some random slides in and follows your drift, well it pisses you off.

Fishing etiquette is not followed by all .

Pinging!

Means exactly what MOB explained (Saving the spot on your GPS) but it could also mean a large snapper sinker heading your way.

Pinging

Tue, 2010-12-14 12:56

While I find it most impolite to have someone rock up and drift where I am, it totally pisses me off when I travel 23 miles offshore and head to my own GPS mark to find someone else in my spot!

What do you guys do when that happens?
