What caused the sinking
Has anyone got any more info on what exactly happened. The channel 7 news was quite sparse on details of what went one apart from the chopper lifting the people up from the ocean, which didn't look to bad.

I wouldn't go out in my 6.8
Northerly, plus a big swell, breaking along many of the reefs all down the coast .....was surprised to see how many boats had headed out !

10k nor westerly and 2m swell. Was at Hillarys today for a gander and it looked fine. Probably got too close to the breaking reef.

I think swells are good. It means you can see all the shallow hard bits quite easily. Its when its dead flat and nothing is breaking that scares me.

"Rogue wave"
Insurance companies buy that one a lot easier than "too much horsepower for my boat and I was being a dickhead" or. "I was too close to a reef where the chart says it normally breaks and I was being a dickhead."

Wave rider bouy doesn't lie
Over 4 metres at Rotto at lunchtime, we drove up the coast from Safety Bay to Freo showing someone our coast and it looked evil .....and even the sSound at Rocko looked nasty hence my observation .......the only place calm was close to shore at SB

Maybe it was 4m the other
Maybe it was 4m the other side if Rotto but seabreeze and willyweather and the multiple people in this post that observed the conditions or actually went out in them say it wasn't that bad in close.
I'd rather get to the bottom of the real cause as I am more than willing to learn from the mistakes of others.

out behind FFB
A mate and I went out behind FFB yesterday (Tuesday) to the 40m mark at about 10am and it was choppy and the swell was quite big but manageable in my 6.7m boat. It was breaking pretty hard over Coventry Reef when we went past so I can imagine it would have been a bit exciting in a smaller boat in close behind the islands. Fish to the conditions and your skill / knowledge level and don't push the capabilities of your boat and you should be right..

here's the news article with video
https://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/wa/a/31628419/fishermen-winched-to-safety-in-rescue-drama/
Three men thrown from their boat when it hit a reef about 9km off Fremantle this afternoon have been winched to safety after they managed to huddle on a rocky outcrop and call for help.
One of the men was able to call triple zero from his mobile phone, which still worked despite having been in the ocean, and alert authorities to their plight.
Their 4.5m boat and its safety equipment had drifted out of reach in the rough seas.
It is understood the men, all in their late 20s, were able to give only a rough description of where they were but a water police boat found them clinging to Seal Rock late this afternoon.
The boat was unable to get close enough to them on the rocky outcrop and the police helicopter was called in to winch them to safety but it is understood the police helicopter had too much fuel onboard to winch them safely and the Rescue Helicopter was called in.
The three men huddle on Seal Rock as they wait to be rescued.
The men were hauled onto the chopper about 5.15pm as the sun set.
Authorities said the men were very lucky to have had a mobile phone, otherwise it would likely have been dark before anyone realised they were in trouble.
The trio was flown to Jandakot, where an ambulance was waiting to take them to Fiona Stanley Hospital for medical checks.
It is believed the men were not badly injured.
Their boat has also been recovered.

Very lucky to have it on them
Very lucky to have it on them and be able to use it. My S7 is water resistant but I store it in the dash however I have a PLB with GPS that I strap to myself before I launch and wear all day. Wouldn't go boating without it.
I also have an app on my phone which I switch on before heading out that allows the Mrs to view my exact location coordinates (or last known coordinates) and sends her an alert when I return to the boat ramp.

Police chopper
The article says...
"It is understood the police helicopter had too much fuel aboard to winch them safely and the RAC rescue helicopter was called in."
Can someone explain why too much fuel onboard would be an issue for winching? Does excess fuel shift the weight distribution or something like that?

All aircraft have a maximum
All aircraft have a maximum load, that consists of Aircraft weight, crew and fuel load. To winch a person you have to factor in the extra weight of the rescued person, and allow for the dynamic forces in the winching operation.
The police helecopter may well have been in the air on a routine patrol and with a full fuel load when it was called over to assist. If it was setting out from Jandakot to go to on a winch mission it would have taken off with a lower weight to allow for this.

Police chopper
police chopper isn't designed or set up for winching , so they would stand by until RAC or Westpac where close by to ensure people in water don't panic

Since when have polair not
Since when have polair not been set up for winching? The one they were flying in the late 90's definitely had a winch capability. Are the new choppers not?

Polair 62
Yep, it has a rescue winch.. http://www.aviationwa.org.au/tag/wa-police/
Eurocopter AS365N3+ Dauphin 2 helicopter, VH-WPX/POLAIR 62. This was delivered in September 2011 and engineers spent over 5,000 hours designing and integrating various systems, including communications, sensors, a forward-looking infra-red (FLIR) camera, Tasking and Dispatch Information Systems (TADIS), special lighting, a rescue winch and other equipment.

I thought so. Their web page
I thought so. Their web page lists both their helicopters as fitted with winches. So it's back to they were either over wieght, incorectly crewed, or said stuff it..... let the rescue chopper get them.

Would be a complete cop out
Would be a complete cop out (pardon the pun) for a cop chopper to not have winching capabilities even with full fuel and personnel loads..

Crew numbers
crew numbers might be why they don't winch , I was on a sar course just last week were we were informed that point that the chopper doesn't carry out the rescue and would rather hand over to Rac or Wetpac who train regularly and have the crew ready to enter the water and assist people in need , we often do training exercises with both groups winching and recovery exercises and never seen police do it,
