Bait is great but dont you find it much more satisfying catching a fish on a lure.

Bet each way
Sometimes, but there are places I fish , that if your chasing a feed or fun , bait is great!
Drop a mulie/scalie over the reef edges at yanchep, two rocks area and I have seen ( but not all caught myself)
pinkies ( just size) , big skippy, tailor, herring , silver bream, cobia, samson, salmon, small macks, bonito
and small mullas.
Thats a hell of a list for basicly one type of bait.
Its strange , years ago I mainly fished for tailor using only poppers and slices and used bait for salmon down south,
but now I use gardies/scalies and sauris for my big tailor , and use rubbers and lures for salmon.
A good fish fooled on a lure/ artifical can give you a big grin , agreed.
My best was a cyristal clear beach up at leeman area , beautiful morning , just wading along in knee deep water
casting a fluro green bomber long A ( remember them!!), watching the lure wiggle towards me across the sand
when 8- 10 feet in front of me a 3kg blue spot flathead erupted out of the sand and swallowed
the lure to its bib, it also scared the crap out of me, and was a real classic bit of luring with the take replayed in slo mo
in my mind for weeks after. Yes I landed it and it feed 4 people that night.
cheers

I am a big fan of fishing
I am a big fan of fishing with lures but the problem is when Tailor come on the chew. Nothing better than being down the beach, chucking out a mulie, cracking a bourbon and watching the sun go down.

Good question
I have tried for tailor a couple of times on lures and a couple on bait around floreat, didn't get a sniff.
I realy want to catch on lures but I realy just want to land one at the moment so here's the question,Is there a better success rate this time of year metro off beaches or rock walls using bait? over lures or not

Lures are most effective for tailor over reefy areas rather than open beach.

Not all the time
I was fishing over reef and rocks this morning with a mate of mine and we were both using mulies and we both easily bagged out. There were 5 other blokes fishing all around us using a variety of lures and they didn't catch 1!!! Granted the water was too dirty for lures this morning I think but I have always found bait out fishing lures most of the time on spots like this unless the tailor are going crazy and will eat anything. All experiences are different though. :-) Sorry Leemo I just re-read you post and realized my reply was a bit misdirected and not relevant to the comparison of lures on reef and sand but more to bait v's lure over reef...my bad.
Burley it and they will come.

All good Howa. These are
All good Howa. These are valid points though - Bait will outfish lures 99% of the time. Saying that, I have fished spots where they dont hit baits, only lures .

ive only just started getting onto lures and plastics, all started when i caught a fairly big sambo on plastic 1m 25kg+ and when i went away for crhistmas holiday caught bulk flatties on plastics and bulk herring and tailor on lures trolling in our little dingy lures are fun unless there isnt a hit in a long time then the bait comes back in

couldn't agree with you more!
couldn't agree with you more! catching anything on lures is very rewarding but sometimes when fishing for tailor i prefer bait eg- a rough surf break where surface lures aren't gonna get enough calm water to do their jobs. Had some good sessions on mainly Richter plugs last year in horrocks- the waves would break on the reef and drag the plug over it and as it soon as it got to the edge, WHAMMO. great fun!

Lures in the late arvo if im
Lures in the late arvo if im fishing off the marina or at night for the choppers under the lights at the beginning of the busso jetty. For the bigger ones I use mulies at night with a chem light just above the gangs, drives em crazy.

Caught heaps of summer
Caught heaps of summer tailor on lures on the west coast, mainly around injidup, even in the middle of the day. The good old gold twisty has to be my favourite. Got the occasional one off the jetty, mainly use bait in the bay thogh.
