Mackie trolling fri morning - spot available

Well, rather late notice, but sometimes plans come together at the last stage.

Planning to troll around for some mackies fri morning seeing as the wind has died down a little. Will be heading out either way in my tinny, but theres room for two on the off chance someone is free at this short notice. Plan is to leave ramp at 4:30 so it'll be an early one.

Headed out to Mindarie. Got

Fri, 2011-03-11 12:03

Headed out to Mindarie. Got there half an hour later than I wanted but didnt matter as it was still dark at 5. First boat there too. Started heading out but a few swell lines and I decided to wait until there was a bit more light before heading out. After waiting a while I headed out. Was only a 2m swell but quite a few breaks Including at least one which didnt show anything shallower than 10m on the chart!) and lots of spots with swell walling up. Made it to staggies but being only one person I didnt really feel confident dodging swell and trying to deweed lures so headed back in. Wasnt exactly smooth, but had to boot it in just to make sure I was faster than the swell. Then got fricken stuck thanks to a free floating rope. Luckily I had a bait knife ready, but still an uneasy feeling being in a swelly area without a motor for a minute.

Decided to try Hillaries so launched there but just too much weed for one person (not easy to keep the boat going on a tiller steer while you deweed). Ah well.

The tiller steer outboard should have a tension

Fri, 2011-03-11 16:00

adjustment that you tighten up.I used to use it while trolling and at speed it just makes it a bit tighter to steer.

On mine its kind of a 'c-clamp' under the throttle. Wont affect the steering, but dont like the idea of having the motor running at a reasonable speed when i'm on some other part of the boat by myself (it'll just stop and go around in a circle atm which is a little easier to swim to should I fall off, though the kill switch is there anyways). At the moment i've adjusted the tension so it doesnt spin too easily, but doesnt get stuck either. Steering would need to be tightened another way, not sure how.

The only guarantee in fishing

Fri, 2011-03-11 12:54

The only guarantee in fishing is that if you dont have a line in the water, you're definitely not going to catch anything. TBH, I expect to go 10 times for 1 fish if i'm lucky but sucks when you dont get your lures in the water :p. Stuff to learn from for next time.

Ha, ha - not true.  Went fishing once and met up with friends on the water.  As I approached them at the meeting point, a very large and violent boil erupted and fish started jumping every where.  Had a 5kg tuna land in the boat.

But yes, I know what you are trying to say........

Yeah, but you didnt catch it

Yeah, but you didnt catch it ;)  Someone I went fishing with once had a mackie fly up and smack into the windscreen. Also, there have been cases where a mackie has grabbed a dangling mulie from a rod in the rod holder or a lure. Not sure how many are ultimately landed though :p.

Dreaded weed. Me and Chrisp

Fri, 2011-03-11 15:07

Dreaded weed. Me and Chrisp had a similar experience 2 weeks ago. Guess you just have to head a bit further offshore to get away from the weed.

Water was really dirty around

Fri, 2011-03-11 16:55

Water was really dirty around Hillarys (hard to tell at Mindarie due to the light). Quite a lot of weed, so looks like its been quite stirred up. Hopefully it'll clear up soon. Damn weed.  Oddly, my sounder was showing water temp as 23.4 deg. Might have to compare that to a thermometer, doesnt seem right (though maybe only rotto is the 27 deg)

remember it is only surface

remember it is only surface temp so you would expect that after the wind and cooler days that inshore would drop off quite quickly. Also very early in the morning is always a lesser temperature
