Submitted by sea-kem on Tue, 2024-02-13 09:49
G'day all, anyone know of any Mackies being caught locally? Water temp would be about right now as latest report says 22.9
Thinking of a troll on the weekend. or even float a mulie out mutton birds permitting.

Not local to you mate
But I've heard of spaniards off Myalup and around Nato, I'm rigging up a couple of lures to give it a crack, if a weather window opens that aligns with work I'm keen on a FADS run for mahi mahi. Something to fill the gaps in demersal bans.

Last tuesday there was 1 boat going up and back, Wednesday there were two boats going up and back and on Thursday last week, there were three boats with balloons and one going up and back. I didnt see anyone catching anything.
I have seen no one out the office window yet this week and I am lucky to be working 20m from the water at the spot that produced the warm water.

One thing I did see on land based reports was a fairly decent Cobia landed of the beach at Wilbinga I think it was.

Trolled gars for 5hours
Trolled gars for 5hours Saturday. One striped tuna lots of bait and flying fish. Had a biiig free jumping mack off the bow but couldn't tempt him. First jump had me second guessing but after his 3rd jump there was no question. Everything went quiet after 12. So early morning is your best bet. This weekend looks pearler for it.

Cheers Rob, just sorting the trolling gear now, after your comments it gives me hope. I'll be trolling the back of a big reef section , have seen plenty of working birds the last few outings.

Worth a go
I trolled a big surface stick bait and a Rapala deep diver past birds and small surface bust ups between Carnac and FFB on Sunday morning without a strike. The water was warm. Seems a few random macks around but hard to find.

Heatwave back then
We trolled some big fish off Mindarie then and it seemed everyone got mackies. Not sure about 2010, but we found them in March 2011. It was a very unusual season, as the water was way above normal temperature and extended all the way south and along the south coast a bit.Hear someone caught a mackerele out of Albany! I read an article that described that 2010-2011 summer as a marine heatwave, with water temperatures 4-5 degrees above normal in many places. It said the heatwave was caused by several factors all coinciding, including an intense La Nina and very strong Leeuwin, with the hot water out to 100m depths. I don't think we have the same conditions now, but agree that March is most likely a chance for a metro mack.
