Reallocation of 20 tonnes back to the Recreational Fishing sector - Recfish announcement
Submitted by Ush on Wed, 2024-02-14 13:07
I guess many would agree that the recent changes in the demersal fishery were over the top, it appears we have given an additional 4 weeks from 1 August to 15 Oct instead of 15 Sept - Thanks.
However for an inshore fisho mainly fishing the sounds for snapper, nothing changes. :(

Need to get rid of the
Need to get rid of the bullshit 4 fish per boat and go back to 2 fish per person and only 2 dhuie per boat.
They must be after brownie points if they are giving back another 4 weeks to fish. Like saying you give me a 100 bucks but I will only give you 10 back

Couldn't agree more it must
Couldn't agree more it must hurt owning a big fishing boat and only being able to take 4 fish especially since WA has always had a reputation for big Ali boats.everyone should be allowed at least 2 fish each .

Big fishing boats
Question. What banks are holding up to pay for the fuel to run your big boats ?

I'm happy with a bit more
I'm happy with a bit more fishing time if it's given, but I do wonder what the future is going to hold

Would prefer they shaved 2
Would prefer they shaved 2 weeks off December or January as well so that all of September was open. Surely the fish are under significantly greater pressure during the xmas holidays when 4 blokes can coordinate time off and go out and smash themselves 4 dhus as I regularly saw on one of the FB pages during the break. Remarkable how many boats were coming in with 4x dhus over 70cm with no smaller dhus, breaksea, baldies or pinkies in the mix…..

I don't think you blokes
I don't think you blokes read this correctly.
The way I see it we only get 2 extra weeks as per the following:
Closures to the recreational fishery will be partially eased, with an additional 10 tonnes per year provided to allow recreational fishers with more time on the water. The spring opening will be doubled from two to four weeks between 16 September and 14 October (inclusive) each year.
The school holidays were already open.

Not sure if I got it across
Not sure if I got it across how I meant (Covid brain) but I was more musing that I'd rather see two weeks shaved off the Dec/Jan school holidays in addition to this and transferred to September. This would see it open up from 1 Sep so we get 6 weeks over Sep/Oct rather than 6 weeks over Dec/Jan when it's ball tearing easterlies followed a SWer by lunch and 10 million boats trying to launch.

Let's face it
It's a small changed to a completely f*****d system that isn't working for anyone, in particular the fish stocks. As Frosty said, the FB pages over Xmas were full of posts with 4 big dhues and nothing else, so theres clearly significant upsizing going on, along with the release of any bycatch which we know doesn't always have a positive result.
Remember we are at most, 12 months from an election, and Dog Punch wants to throw us a bone in the hope we'll forget his complete ineptitude and lack of regard for actual science in his green appeasing approach to date.
Now's the time to ramp up the representations to local members about this, no better time than an election year to influence government policy.
There's got to be a better answer.

Succinctly put mate, you are right he's thrown us bone to hopefully chew on. Most will see through that crap.
It doesn't help me one iota as I can only launch my boat November-May via beach where I am.

Unfortunately with so many
Unfortunately with so many recs actually unwilling (or cant be bothered) to put together a united front, its small steps to go in the right direction.
A bone from the Minister? 100%, but a bone is a bone...
It has come to be obvious that putting forward widespread "tweeks" makes it too easy for DPIRD and the Minister to throw it in the bin.
Rather individual changes.
This is the same as their techniques of chipping away bit by bit of what your allowed to do (access for remote camping, Sth coast marine parks, firearms, fishing)
As if they had tried what they have already put in place in one hit, for sure thered be widespread and unjiversal opposition.

Yep agree Rob, They will
Yep agree Rob,
They will probably backflip slightly on the proposed firearm changes also...
So when we think they are a mob of C%$ts, we soften our thoughts and feel like they are doing us a favour coming into an election year...
On another note, I see the nationals are pushing back against the firearm changes, perhaps they need to be leaned on here to get some common sense back into the WHOLE WA fishing sector.
Here is a link on the nationals pushing back on Firearms changes....

If you read the detail,18t
If you read the detail,
So reading between the lines, commercial fishers were bought out. Half was given for free to " other commercial fisheries "
and we and the charter sector get a loan of some quota for a while and then it will be reallocated for free back to the commercial sector at a later date.
Cheers

In that case you best all get behind RFW who have released a statement this arvo as well about this.
Or will we see 50% saying "it wont help why bother".
Do nothing and definitely get bent over, do something and maybe only get half bent over until there is a power shift.
I just spent a few of days in Shark Bay with a few mates-I have been warned by a reliable source there is more restrictions coming there as well via a slightly different process.
We had a jet boat up there and covered a fair swag of the lower Western Gulf, mind boggling how much is already inaccessable since Carrarang/Tamala stopped providing it.

Any idea why they closed
Any idea why they closed access. Did they ever announce themselves why it happened I know a lot of people could speculate why but interested if they I put something upp themselves.

Tamala access
Not sure about Carrarang, but Tamala access was closed due to the denial of their camping license renewal. They now have to go through the process of negotiating an Inndigenous Land Use Agreement which includes camping rights, this takes upward of 2 years if things all go smoothly. Been ongoing since 2020 so they may have just given up as being too hard by now. If they do manage to get an ILUA and camping license look forward to a list of restrictions and rules that'll take most of your holiday to wade through.

Now that they're providing
Now that they're providing some quantifiable figures (10 tonne in 2 weeks during Sep) I'm going to follow back up with my local member to ask for rec estimates of biomass for each month with a particular interest in January and the last 2 weeks of December.

I don't think so.e people
I don't think so.e people realy understand the severity of the situation. I was watching a YouTube video just the other day that popped up from 6 months ago.
They said in the title it was out of Albany. 2 on the boat and I counted 18 fish on the boat . From dhuie pink snapper and red snapper . Even in the rules down there I thaught it was only 5 demersal each.
Things like that will stuff it up .

That’s right
Yep 5 demersals each in the southern zone,so it's 5 cat 1 species and then still allowed 8 nanny's and 8 swallowtail each on top of that
