do tackle stores still sell tubs of maggots for bait?....has anyone used them lately as i know they now sell the plastic maggots by the jar but do they get the same result?

We sell the frozen maggots that're in a plastic vac sealed bag. They work well on herring & gardies etc. I've used the Gulp maggots (SP) and they work also!

maggots

dead easy to make your own.

buy an ox heart or something similar. leave it out for a few days. wrap it in paper and wait for a few days.

empty the maggots into  a container and then mix the maggots with bran.

put them in the fridge. should keep for 3-4 months.

easy to tell when they are turning as they start to go black.

the bran cleans them out and provides no smell.

we would catch bream by the bucket load (all released of course) and mobs of trout.

I can second the gulp

I can second the gulp maggots, if you can buy a tub or two just go and do it, keep it in your tackle box for when you are out and need to catch fresh bait like yellowtail and slimies or herring and gardies

the idea of putting them in

Thu, 2009-06-18 23:11

the idea of putting them in your mouth was to warm them up on a cold morning so they wriggle around a bit more to entice the fish, i cant say i have ever tried tha one but

maggots work awesome when

Thu, 2009-06-18 19:20

maggots work awesome when you are going for small fish, if they dont get hook there is still more bait left for the next fish to have a bite

Maggot Recipe

Fri, 2009-06-19 00:26

A few years ago "fresh maggots" were available for sale but I think that has changed hence the frozen vac sealed ones now (and they don't last). If you want maggots that last here is the recipe that my wife uses to breed them:

  • Catch some fish (Anykind) or use any meat
  • Keep the heads after cleaning them
  • Place fish heads or meat in an open container (Outdoors of course)
  • When you see some white/yellow little eggs on them they are fly blown
  • Wrap the fish scraps and eggs loosely in about 6  to 10 sheets of newspaper
  • Place the parcel in a bucket with a thin layer of pollard in the bottom (Can be put on a brick or similar)
  • Leave for 5 to 7 days and they start eating way through paper and then eat pollard
  • Unwrap paper one at a time and put them in pollard in a different bucket/container
  • Dispose of smelly newspaper
  • Get a fresh container, seive old pollard into bin
  • Place maggots into a fresh container of pollard an let them purge
  • Put them into smaller containers with pollard and place into fridge

They have lasted up to 6 months for us.

But there is one other ingredient that she insists on...... surgical gloves when handling them while breeding them but get her out fishing and she will bait them up no probs.

Cheers,

David

Or try this one..

Fri, 2009-06-19 12:59

Plan a trip to Kalbarri for a week..
Ask the young fella to make sure everything is switched off in the garage.(where the bait fridge is)..
Go away for a week...
Come back a week later and notice the fishy smell coming from your garage door..and wonder why you bought a house so close to the beach...
Go into your garage and notice blood running out of your bait fridge...
Open door for a maggot fest..
Take the whole fridge to the tip and keep the maggots...
Try get your Missus to talk to you in the next week..
