Man dead after boat hit wave off Exmouth
Submitted by carnarvonite on Tue, 2013-10-08 13:14
Just came over the news that a man is dead and another 5 were thrown in to the sea after hitting a wave off Exmouth.
Seems as though two boats were travelling in convoy and one boat disappeared after striking the wave, on returning the second boat found the others all in the water with one man deceased

Was just reading about that,
Was just reading about that, what a tragedy
First thing I did was have a look at Exmouth Swell & Wind, nothing looks out of the ordinary.
Perhaps some locals on here could give some info, a notorious spot or near a reef system?

Further info says they were
Further info says they were trolling by a reef
Could be a shallow reef and a freak wave if they were on the land side

Hindsight is marvelous. We were out at Coral Bay that day. Wind was great and swell ok away from the reef.

Scary conditions.
I was out at the wreck that morning 7-9 am. Scary conditions. Biggest sw swell Ive seen in the past 5 years. Lighthouse bay was 6foot plus Set every few minutes with 15 knot ssw wind on it.Nw reef was huge. Regularly sets were breaking between nw reef and the cape and around 8.30 one set made it the whole way accross. 4 waves it was an awsome site. Waves were breaking inside nw reef in spots I havent seen in years. As an experienced boaty in the area I was scared just looking at it from shore. Hope this gives you a picture of the conditions that morning.
Total tradegy and one that could so easily have been avoided. No fish is worth risking your life for.
