marlin at abrohlos
my little cousin working out of north island went out for a marlin fish with his boss n his ol man out SW from north island in 120 fathom. Raised 4 marlin boated one 140kg on stand up gear. No photos unfortunately. These are old school boys but the water was bubbling with action. If any of yous are going over there, the billies are on the chew. water temp out there was 26 deg which is perfect.
So if you go over do the trip out to the edge its not that far from the back of the islands weather permitting of course!!
There are amazing bottom dwellers out there as well for the deep drop guys!
My cousin also got into a Cpl of Reds just size so went back! So there def are Reds out from there just gota look for the sponge bottom and youll find them.

swordies there as well, we'd
swordies there as well, we'd come in as close as 500 meters deep which is about as shallow as can safely longline and plenty of swords there, thats only a few miles further

Ive often thought about it
Ive often thought about it myself, just to see if my ideas on how it might work are correct. But dont really have that much interest in game fishing.
Hard to achieve in a small boat but the BEST bite times for swordies are
1/ full moon and
2/ night before a front hits.

billfish
Been an extremely good season for bills at the abrolhos so far! Blues biting there heads off - many boats coming back with multiple hookups and tags to report.

nw
usual for when the fish bite best. when winds go round to nw-w before front comes through. the warm water swirls start to fire up. the north tide starts to crank up and the water temp on the edge of the warm water swirls pick up a half deg to deg. That's where the swordies will hang feeding on the squid that rise up to the surface as the warm water starts to move with the north tide. definitely achievable in a small boat. Just gota make sure the weather is suitable for it. From North Island its only 20-30mile NW to where you need to go. I have a spot marked already when I went tuna fishing and took a bearing off the lighthouse becon from north island. Got the lat and long and pinged it. This spot we got so many swordies off it was crazy. And some big YFT and Big Eye that will come in close to feed on the bait that comes up with the warm water and north tide.
