Marlin skirts.

Just bought a few skirts for an up coming trip, ive gone with pakula, 8" to "12, colours lumo, evil angel, pink angel, blue slash, i know these posts dont go to far with most the guru's but if anyone has a suggestion or 2 can always fit a couple more in the bag.... have one soft oscar in black purple and plan on getting another pink one, but any go to lures someones willing to share out there? Keep in mind will be running 15kg.

Cheers in advance.

If you dont have a richter

Sun, 2012-02-19 06:53

If you dont have a richter medium zulu in lumo you are doing your trolling a disservice - number one lure for us for 3 years in a  row on pretty much everything. Other one would have to be a pink and white soft grassy to run in shotgun. Pakula catch a heap of fish so what you have will work fine but the above have caught 90% of all our fish in 5 trips north and a lot of trolling. The other one that seems to get a lot of hits for us on riggers is the super stripey no3 by black magic in blue white and red.

For me I reckon if they are in clean water and swimming well and you are in the right spot then lure choice is probably a distant third. Only other tips I have is don't overdo your wind on leader weights - 200lb is fine unless you go very wide at Exxy and really 150lb will probably attract more fish and land a majority if you are fishing 15- 24kg. Always always sharpen your hooks after every strike and check your lures in case your skirt has been shortened by something toothy. Always have someone watching the spread and if you see bill or get a short strike keep mving forward but drop the lure back by freespooling - we would pick up at least half our fish like this and I often wonder how many we miss just because we did not see them in the spread on rough days. If you want any more tips drop us a PM with a number and I will give you a call. there are heaps of better marlin fishos on here than me but happy to share our learning curve over the past 5 years of trying.

With the size of the fish

Sun, 2012-02-19 07:30

With the size of the fish people are getting (150-280kg) not sure you're gonna land a fish on 15kg.

fishing out of a 5.8 tinny, the other blokes are running tiagra 50's i only have a tyrnos 30 and last time i landed my one and only billy was about 100/120 on 24kg standup and onl pen international and almost spooled me.i dont think we will be heading to wide till, but will soon see, if 15kg doeant cut it will just be a bit of a learning curve and the tiagra/tcurve 24kg combo will be purchased for the rematch. guys told me most of what they encontered where not in the :150-280kg" range.

Most of the fish people see

Mon, 2012-02-20 19:32

Most of the fish people see in Perth are over 200kg, places like Jurien seem to have small blacks and they're certainly fine on the 15kg.

Personally, I wouldn't loan my lures to you for use in Perth on 15kg and I don't rate my chances of getting them back ;)

You still have got a shot at landing one on 15 if you no what your doing,

but if your just starting out then yeah your right till you could be in a bit of trouble

would run the smaller lures wide and run a big lure short corner,

have a rigged gar ready for when one comes in and cant decide if it wants to eat or not drop that on its nose should change its mind pretty quick

action and the right spot at the right time over lure colour sometimes, seen them before go to every lure in the patten and still not bite

Depends what depth and size

Sun, 2012-02-19 10:26

Depends what depth and size lures you are running as to what size fish you will be finding....occasionally a bigger fish turns up and blows everything away.
I'm guessing you are targetting blacks from 40-80kg and fishing from 50-120m of water?
I usually run around 7 to 9 in lures in purple/black and lumos. Actually lure types and positions depend on weather conditions and where the strikes are coming from.

Mon, 2012-02-20 13:51

The moldcraft wide range is a proven fish catcher. Not the prettiest of lures but its well priced! Only downfall i can think of is if the razor gang are around you can't replace the skirts, but for around $25 thats a cheap feed of hoo. Gotta love getting set up for an exxy trip, not heading up there this year Have fun mate.

Mon, 2012-02-20 15:44

geez guys was sending myself broke, looks like the collection may get to 13-15, small heads up though some of yas may already know, found someone to sell me pre rigged (to igfa spec) pakulas at 2/3 the price of local unrigged ones and if you order $150 worth shipping is free and again after speaking with the bloke on the phone he's sending me a free rigged lure and a life bait rig, big props to this guy was very helpful to say the least.

just mentioning incase any1 else is interested.

be very carefull with pre rigged pakulas

Thu, 2012-02-23 15:38

i bought a heap before my last trip north and ended up losing two due to the crimps not being crimped properly, if you ask peter pakula he will admit that there pre rigged range is not up to his standards! and im pretty sure he said he was going to drop that range due to the problems he was having!  so go through each lure and check them! out of 12 lures we found two that were good to use the other ten needed recrimping!

When i say pre-rigged this

Thu, 2012-02-23 19:51

When i say pre-rigged this guy is rigging them himself, after 2 phone conversations with him ive got the idea he knows alot more than me about billys, which i have to admit isnt much.

Only marlin ive caught was on a pre rigged richter from bluewater melville, being the lazy, half assed person i am, i'll take the risk.

If i lose one due to a failed pre-rigged lure i'll post for all to "told you so".

Hand rigged Richters are very

Thu, 2012-02-23 19:59

Hand rigged Richters are very different to rigged pakulas. Mark, or his son, rigs them all here in Perth in small batches. Pakulas are rigged by some guy in China by the bucket load.

You might rerig Richters to get different hooks or something like that, but there is nothing wrong with the quality.

Don't like prerigged lures

Mon, 2012-02-20 16:02

Don't like prerigged lures myself. Always seem way over gunned o
in leader sizes and have had some with questionable crimping. I do it all myself so only me to blame when it all goes bad.
Not real keen on the pakula dojo range either. Cheap enough but just seem to catch fish.

Anyone use the zacattak

Fri, 2012-02-24 14:45

Anyone use the zacattak sprockets? (the old pakula ones before they were chinese jobs)

Herad great things about them over east for blues, thinking of trying a couple in exxy next month.

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.
