Mercury Problems
Submitted by Swan River Fisher on Wed, 2011-08-31 15:24
Hey guys
I have a 3.9m runabout with forward steer and a 30hp merc
Whenever i run for about 15 minutes at about 70% speed, it starts to cut out and choke a bit, with the boat going forward fast, the stopping suddenly. It seems like there is not enough petrol going to the engine. it is fine at low speeds say under 6 knots. It is a newish 2006 2 stroke model. I have also put a fuel filter on it, and it has been serviced just last week.
Any suggestions to why or how this is happening?
Much appreciated

Yes water in the fuel tank
Yes water in the fuel tank but we have the fuel filter which takes out the water.
Sorry what did you mean when you said you 'bled the bulbs'?
Thanks

check for any cracks in the
check for any cracks in the fuel line and more likely replace the connector that joins the fuel line to the motor.
you will find air is getting in
had that prob a few times myself and always been the fuel hose connector (i am sure it has a proper name)

Fuel filter
Check your fuel filter and drain off any water sitting at the bottom of the bowl. Another thing to look for , is the vent on the fuel tank opened fully? If not it will build up a vacuum in the tank and create the same result, coughing and farting while starving for fuel.

Thanks Canarvonite and lazy
Thanks Canarvonite and lazy lee,
I have opened the vent on the fuel tank and always open it just before i start the motor and close it after the motor has stopped running.
And lazy lee i have checked the fuel line and have not seen any holes or cracks; it is relitively new. i havent checked the fuel connection so i will do that asap.
Cheers

Also could it be the spark
Also could it be the spark plugs? After the servicing the guy said that the spark plugs were the only thing that needed replacing, so could the spark plugs have something to do with it?
Thanks

service doesn't fix a problem!
but i would be taking it back and ask for a water test, faults like that sometimes cant be found running motors up in the tank, if they are reputable dealer/technician should get fixed at a reasonable price

mariner
Hey Benno,
I had a 40hp mariner 2strocke which had similar problems and it was a 2006 as well. after running a while in lower range it started to choke and was just running 1 cylinder. After about 5 servives and spark plug change, fuelfilter change , leads change, coil changes , new tank, plenty of mechanic and my own time the problem was still there. Now mechanic could help and the motor was taken apart a few times to check rings and anything inside. I had to get rid of it. So if you cant solve it cut your loses and get rid of it.
Cheers Seb

My motor might be a lemon like yours
Its difficult for me to sell and buy a new one because I'm still at high school. Me and my dad have put so much time into this like new floors, gps, fuel filters, storage tanks and stuff. My dad bought it for me and i dont want to turn around and slam it back in his face, so i can't sell it, even just the motor and keep the trailer and boat.
If i did sell it, i would get next to nothing because its not in working condition.
I was seriously considering turining it into a tiller steer, so maybe if i repowered with a tiller steer, that would be better.
Any idea on how much a 15hp 2 stroke would cost- and no not a 15hp MERCURY!
Sorry I'm asking a lot, help would be much appreciated :/

Black anchor
Mercury motors haven't got the nick name of "Black Anchors" for nothing.

There are two types of people ,do'ers and watchers
Right now the do'ers are the doing it
And the watchers are watching us do it

Ok, yamaha have been good to
Ok, yamaha have been good to me with no problems with the previous boat
Tiller steer would be so much easier- pull start, lock to lock steering is less than a second, no problems with throttle stick, lighter
Visibility would be less but thats ok
Thanks guys for the advice, but would prefere to keep the motor and fix it. Its only 2006 this shouldnt be happening.
Wil call the mechanic to have another look and take it for a run on the water with me

Had one that was similar to that. Turned out to be an overheating problem that led to a crack in one of the bores. Ran fine from start up but a few minutes in and the thermostat opened it effectively flooded the combustion chamber and extinguished any spark.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

Gumtree
If you do consider a new motor its may be worth havin a look on gumtree or so. You might can pick up a good second hand one! And I would stick to a yammy or suzi as well

Crack
Its probably due to over heating and if the barrels that contain the pistons cool too fast they can crack through in to the water jacket so next time it gets up to operating temperature the crack opens , sucking water in to the combustion chamber creating a miss fire or worse a busted head

My first boat had some issues
My first boat had some issues which I narrowed down to the O ring on the connecter where the fuel line joins the motor. The O ring was split. I replaced it and everything was fine.
