Metro Giant Herring :D

I found them again! The ski finally got serviced and fixed, after a couple months out of service I was finally able to get her back on the water. By the time I got home from picking it up in Wangara, it was nearing 5 o'clock, which would leave me an hour of light before I would have to switch on the newly installed nav lights, and head back to the ramp.

The plan was to head out and have a quick session on tailor on stickbaits and after 5 mins from leaving the ramp me brother and I were getting stuck straight into them. We seemed to spook them after nit to long so I putted 50m from where we were and cast again. After skipping the little dual adagio only a couple meters something huge exploded out of the water but missed the hooks and all the way back to the ski the lure was followed by some big boils and tail swirls! I remember yelling at Cody to cast in that direction and as soon as his lure hit the water mine followed suit only a couple meters behind. Crank crank bang bang double hookup on exploding giant herring! It was a dead give away once the fish started cartwheeling meters into the air, and both fish spitting the lures shortly after.

In the next 5 mins I manage to lose 6, my brother around the same but he also managed to land two beauties! The one we measured was 62cm, joy!

Now comes the interesting part of the story! With the first fish Cody managed to finally land, as he was taking the barbs out, the fish shook and one of the hooks on the front treble went into his thumb past the barb! I got the fish unhooked and said to him we either try get it out at home or we go to the hospital. He then just started pulling on it, while I was dry reaching at the front of the ski. He got it out, and also some stringy stuff from inside his finger, which I told him to just push back in the hole it came through!

He proceeded to fish on and hooked and landed another one, lucky bastard. This time, the hook got stuck in my thumb! I couldn't even wiggle it let alone try pull it out. I got the trusty $10 bcf multi tool out to cut the treble away from the lure but that failed miserably, with the multi tool now stuck to the lure also! Turned out to be quite a disaster.

After a strong bourbon and coke and a couple replays of a youtube hook removal tutorial video at home it came straight out.

The whole lot was filmed, so I'll be adding a video in a couple weeks once I'm home from work.
From now on, my trebles will be changed to singles where possible, the front treble removed on all lures and BARBS CRUSHED!

What a story eh?!

Ahh the awkwardness of fishing off a ski but the greatness of getting into some metro GH, got ne pics of the hezzas? Crush the barbs but dont take off the center hooks, I do the same for tailor coz the only hit the back of the lure but after missing a mack on a popper hittin it sideways several times, Im putn the center hooks back on.

dont worry mate, last time i did it had a chick with me, was tying rigs in the backyard and slipped, she simply laughed at me, was a long shank hook in the tip of the finger past the barb down to where the hook straightens, went to the local doc to get it cut out and because ide been drinking the night before, had nothing to eat all morning when the doc started cutting into my finger i almost passed out (excuses). had to drink some water and eat a few lollys, mate i went white as a ghost.

looked like a total legend.

Had a decky get an identical hook in his left hand between the thunb and forefinger, the hooh followed the curve of his finger  and only the eye was visible. It happened off the Abrolos just after we had finished setting out the gear for the night and meant a 6 hour cruise in to Gero , drop him off, cruise back out and pick the gear up then back to Gero as planned. When put with those options he decided to take a few panadiene fortes, a few cans and wait it out.

They had to slice in to where they thought the barb was to cut it off before pulling the hook back out.

Rob, was Paul trying to put gear in the water too fast or when you got a big livey come aboard?

Rob H that is disgusting, I can not even imagine the pain he was in, how did the get it out the end?

Vander the lure is a Dual Adagio, awesome for smaller tailor, herring, and skippy if you're patient enough to let it sink, oh and apparantely for giant herring too!

Yeah the dude with them in both hands definitely wins (or loses).

Keen to hear the story of how he got both hands done?!

Barbless singles all the way :-)

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

 If youve seen Perfect storm

Thu, 2012-05-03 12:13

If youve seen Perfect Storm it happened pretty much the same except one of my deckies was quick enough to grab his legs to stop him going over the back until we could reverse 90 tonnes of boat and take the weight off.

Cut the wire traces off with the disc grinder and into port (12 hours). Flew him to Perth but they waited 3 days to remove them.

Unfortunately there was a tangle in the snoods as we were setting but instead of grabbing the knife and just chopping the offenders off somehow his hands got in there and it was all downhill from there.

Two others

Sat, 2012-05-05 08:16

Had another two happen, decky grabbed the trace leader and tried to flick a 1.5 metre sandbar whaler across the deck , it latched on to his knee resulting in 8 hour drive in to Hedland to get him stitched up [took vid of doctor doing it] then steam back out. All up about 80 stitches.

The other was mate had another sandbar rub against the inside of his right leg resulting in the skin getting ripped off from his ankle bone right up to the bottom of his calf muscle , a patch of about 7  x 4 inches , all the way through to the meat . Lovely sight, was 2 weeks before we got in, doctor said it needed a skin graft but there was no way he was going to  do that, took months to heal properly.

we were pretty lucky on that score

Sat, 2012-05-05 09:15

6 years of Southern Ocean winter longlining and the hooks were the worst for us, other than the usual drug related dramas and equipment damage from wild weather, bailing crew out of the slammer etc

But other friends had much worse.

-finger pulled off by a yellowfin on a run (towards Leeuwin ironically)

-suicide (gun) on board 24 hrs from Freo

-attempted suicide
